Now that it's pinning, it's probably best to avoid misting. Once the fruits grow into small mushrooms, you can mist again, but be sure to up the air exchange so the fruits don't sit wet for any length of time or they abort. You can currently use a syringe or something similar to carefully water the casing layer without getting the pins wet.

Coffee is an excellent substrate and it seems to help increase pinning quality, but I doubt it's the N content. Perhaps the antioxidants? You want to use spent coffee grinds in your substrate so you can't add it now. Dunking in coffee is almost a sure recipe for green mold. Grains can be soaked in weak liquid coffee prior to sterilization.

Drill several holes near the bottom and again at the top of your FC. These will help to provide constant air exchange and will prevent the buildup of CO2.

In the world of mycology, when exactly is a pin considered a mushroom?

I've always wondered this since people use the term pinning so loosely.

Sure, I'll tackle that one. In the first picture below, you'll see all primordia. They're larger than hyphal knots but not differentiated into pins with a distinct cap yet.

The second picture, while not high resolution, shows hyphal knots(bottom left corner) primordia, pins and one small mushroom. I'm not sure there is an 'official' definition of when a pin becomes a 'mushroom', since a pin technically IS a mushroom.

If you want to up the N content of Coir use Blood Meal.

As of right now I find that 1/4c of Blood Meal per small brick of coir works well. I can't say that it's the optimal amount to use since I'm not done testing different amounts yet. Testing is slow.

Yep. Looks like the first casing is a bit dry, but avoid misting until pins form as Roger stated. In the future mist daily, and drying out won't be an issue.

Thanks RR and Agar. I needed that pictoral to help me out in the future. It should help me start the misting again in a more timely manner.

My casing dried up a bit because I paused for too long after knotting.

I'll used that syringe tip, too, to rehydrate a bit.

Can't wait for the dunk and the second flush!!

Seems the water content will be a plenty 2nd time around.

Would a dry casing inhibit growth much on the first flush? Or is the drying we're seeing here pretty superficial?

I mist right through pinning, the trick is to mist very lightly,That means no direct spraying just let the droplets fall onto the casing
