Using a coleman cooler to colonize straw.

I am using a coleman cooler to colonize about 6 inches of straw. I was just thinking about putting the lid on the cooler and putting a hole in each side of the cooler. In one hole i would place a small vaccum cleaner HEPA filter and in the other a 3 inch computer fan running at a low speed. This would provide constant gas exchange and would keep clean air coming in. I had the fear that this would dry out the substrate. I currently cover it with plastic with many holes. Does anyone see any drawbacks in this idea. Hell, I think it would work as long as the constant air flow wasn't too much. Maybe I could put a weak bubbler humidifaction system in it and use a small amount of perlite with some hydrogen peroxide in the water. That would help to keep the substrate from drying out and would be sterile as well.

Or does there need to be some CO2 present?

For colonization, just cover it up and leave it in a dark place. For fruiting, run a cool mist humidifier on a timer in there. Cut a small hole for co2 escape. This takes care of humidity and fresh air exchange.

That sounds like the reasonable thing to do. I just like to go to extremes sometimes. I appreciate the reply. I wish you luck in your growing adventures.

Sound like you have done some thinking!! If I were you, Id turn the fan on for about 10 minutes about 3 times a day. This way, there is no worry about drying it up.
