Cold meds weaker without pseudoephedrine

Cold medications on shelves weaker
December 18, 2006 - Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Drug companies have eliminated a key ingredient in cold medicines used to make methamphetamine, but some experts say the reformulated versions don't work as well.

Several states, including North Carolina, have recently put restrictions on the sales of Sudafed, Tylenol and other drugs containing the decongestant pseudoephedrine.

But experts say reformulated versions containing the pseudoephedrine substitute phenylephrine or PE, isn't as effective and must be taken more frequently.

A study released this fall by Claritin maker Shering-Plough found PE gave as much nasal relief as a placebo. Some consumer advocates and members of Congress want a reluctant Food and Drug Administration to re-examine 30-year-old PE dosage standards.

Some customers dislike the restrictions they encounter at stores when buying medicines with pseudoephedrine, which requires buyers to go to the pharmacy counter, wait in line and hand over a driver's license.

"I feel like a crook, like I'm going to cook some meth," said Anna Smith, who was buying the medicine at a Target in Matthews. "It doesn't make me feel any safer, any better."

A North Carolina law pushed pills containing pseudoephedrine behind pharmacy counters in January. The number of meth labs found in North Carolina has fallen 43 percent to 186 in the past year.

"It's a small inconvenience for a major public safety benefit," N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper said.

Nasal Decongestants

Pseudoephedrine (PSE) -- Former medicine of choice, but used to make methamphetamine. Was in 200 products on the market last year; now in 30, CVS says.

Phenylephrine (PE) -- Replacement but must be taken every four hours instead of six for PSE. Almost nonexistent a year ago; now in 100 products.

i really doubt that it will have any impact on meth production.

The large producers certainly don't use expensive OTC products to get their ephedrine.

The laws of supply and demand mean that ephedrine will always be readily available. its just that the price may fluctuate if they make it harder to get hold of.

Stopping the OTC may stop some kids from blowing themselves up though!

Putting restrictions on cold medications containing pseudoephedrine has had a major effect on meth production. Manufacture of methamphetamine from superlabs in Mexico and elsewhere has ramped up dramatically.

The evidence is overwhelming that there is now a higher quality, more addictive, and cheaper meth readily available in states that have moved cold medicines behind the counter.

Yeah, essentially we're just forcing more and more drug money out of the U.S. economy and into Mexico...
