AGAR to brf or 9er?
    #6380160 - 12/17/06 07:53 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I am preparing rice for the 9er tek. was wandering if I can sprinkle some agar with the rice, and if so, how much to a 2lb bag of brown rice?

I've no experience as the use of agar pertains to mycology, mind you, but from the long hours spent in my boring biology labs at my uni I think I can say that agar in and of itself wouldn't be a real nutrient boost over BRF, especially in a jar or pan of substrate. Agar is used primarily because when mixed with liquids, it forms a gel that can be used for cultures. And even at that most agar mixes utilize other nutrients (yes, even BRF) to boost their nutrient content for better cultures. I know that when we worked with bacteria, we never used just agar, it was always a mix of agar and other nutes.

So long story short, unless you want a gelly residue in your rice, I don't think the agar is necessary. But I could be wrong. Maybe it has been used to increase nutrient content or the ability of a substrate to retain moisture.

Don't waste your time, it sounds like a sticky mess waiting to happen. Whole grain brown rice by itself has more than enough nutrients to throw out some nice crops:
