Thats possible! But since Canada and US trade grain so freqently, I doubt it.
Can you explain your problem with rye? I'd like to help.

ive always been confused about using rye cause i never know where to even find the right rye, and the normal rye ive tryed to cook it gets smelly when i put it to inoculation, i just always used brown rye flour with vermiculite.

Magash-- Sweet tek, great pics. Thank you so much. I once made a Martha Stewart closet myself but there was way too much duct tape... it got all soggy.... Anyway, a couple questions... why do you soak the measured rye grain inside of the jars, rather than measuring it all out and soaking in a large pot? Was that just for the sake of the tek? Also, you said your casings are as thick as the substrate, is this because it's a straight grain casing? I thought Stamets et al. say about 1:4, casing to substrate? Thanks again, keep it up.

hey... i'm wondering if the rye berries vs. rye grains bit was cleared up? im planning to do this tek soon and i reckon it might be hard in oz to find the right stuff...
also, what roughly is the ratio of dry rye to casing, also i'm a bit unsure the depth of casing to substrate like the previous poster. i want to calculate how much rye i will need.
thanks

I only use rye berries...you can buy a 50lb sack at your local farm supply or feed store under the names Fall rye or Winter rye for less than $20.
BTW since this thread has been bumped anyway...where is Magash lately?

FYI, I'm not sure if this is just in my area or not (Outside Houston), but here "Winter Rye" is just rye grass seed that is spread in the winter, not the whole grain rye wanted.
I live out in the country and there are numerous feed stores around. Every one that I went to and asked for "winter rye" pointed me to a bag of rye grass seed. Sometimes the bag would even be labeled "Winter Rye", but it was still just the grass seed. When I would ask for any whole grain rye, they all just looked at me kind of strange and said, "Nope, this is the only rye we carry".
I never found any whole grain rye in feed stores around my area and the one health food store that carried rye was too expensive, so I use WBS.
Just a warning to anyone buying "Winter Rye" from a feed store, open the bag and make sure it's whole grain and not grass seed!
Check out this post by Anno for a great pic showing the difference between rye grain and grass seed.
Hope this helps someone from buying the wrong rye!

I noticed your 60/40 coco coir casing did not include any materials to buffer the pH.
Do you feel like this is an unnecessary step? Are there any advantages as far as yields to buffering the casing layer pH?

As far a buffering many do it and I'm sure it doesn't hurt myself I just have never found a need when using coir esp if it's coir from a hydro shop it should come ph balanced already. Really the only time I found buffering to help is when using peat moss.
