Spore experiment.
    #6379582 - 12/17/06 04:22 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Okay so I have shit loads of spores in my GH..They settle and dry on the shelfs in the form of flakes the size of quarters.

I used a sterile dental pick and gently slipped about a dozen of these quarter sized flakes off the shelving and into a sterile 1/2 pint jar then immediately covered with tyvek.

I then went to my very clean work area and gently removed tyvek and filled with bottled water then replaced lid and covered with tyvek...I use this same area for open air G2G with great success.

Anyone else doing it this way?
I'd love to hear any feed back.

I will update upon failure/success.

Thx.

If you GH is super clean I guess you'd have a usable spore solution. I know my greenhouse isn't that clean though. I don't even filter the air going into it. I find it's just too easy to take prints.

greenhouses (FCs) are not normally the most sterile of environments. i imagine that there is a high risk to there being contams settled in with the spores. thats why its nice to be able to grow out test LCs before you ruin any substrate.

Yes my GH is clean...but thats what i dont get..you take a cap from within the GH and make a print...whats the difference in removing spores from within the GH and basically doing the same thing?

Both ways come from the same GH...clean or not.

Just wondering.
Thx.

you talking about the difference between scraping dust out of your FC and fresh mushroom cap, gills facing down, and until VERY recently, covered by the universal veil.

anywho, it might work, why not.

also consider the fact that you will be mixing spores from many different mushrooms, and strains if you have been growing more that one.

Thanks man...I will defiantly start an LC first to test.
I would like to say its not dust, rather flakes of spores.

I would also like to say that in the past I took one of these flakes to a 1 quart jar added tap water and dumped in about 2 tbl spoons worth of light corn syrup and it's the best LC i've ever seen...NO PC'n ,Microwaving or nothing...the result was fully colonized rye in 10 days.

I think people get TO freaked out being sterile when You and your Environment just need to be Clean.

Thanks again.

indeed.
as far as the LC you made goes, i imagine one of those flakes would be enough spores to make a 20cc syringe (quarter-sized). so you swamped the Karo with spores and nothing else could even compete.

a Qt. of LC only needs 1/4cc of spore solution to get going.

thats neither here nor there. good luck
