Amazing deal on 23-quart pressure cooker!

Now, before everyone gives me their undying love of All American pressure cookers, I want to make it clear I like them too. Although I have never owned one, I have seen them in person, and they are built very well. The downside to them is, however, they cost between 2 to 3 times as much as other cookers. And yes, you can find them cheap on Ebay if you keep looking, but they are never cheap new.
After much consideration of a used AA925, I decided instead to get a new Presto 01781 23-quart pressure cooker for about 1/3rd the price. A cooker this size can hold 4 large full spawn bags, 24 half pints, 20 pints, or 7 quarts. It's a very good medium size for mycology work in my opinion. Currently they are available at Amazon.com for $72 delivered (free shipping):

Although the shipping was free, I recieved the unit only a few days after ordering it! All I can say about this Presto is WOW! It is perfect! Not only does it have a pressure guage to make sure your pressure is correct, it also has a rocker weight that is vastly better than the giggle type weight that some of the new AAs and other cookers sometimes use. With this rocker weight the cooker only releases the right amount of steam to keep it from overheating and is almost silent if the temperature is properly adjusted. And because the cooker releases almost no steam if the temperature is set right, you lose virtually no water and experience no boil inside the unit.
For $72 delivered, this 23-quart Presto cooker is a total steal. I am so glad I went with it rather than spending 3X for a more expensive AA unit.

Yeah. That's the one I bought too. Actually I bought a little one first, the name of which escapes me, and promptly sent it back and got that one. For the money it's a really good deal. Additionally you can fit 10 quart jars in there because you can lay three down in a triangle shape on top of the 7 that are upright.

Good info to pass on

Absolutely nothing wrong with the Presto's and Mirro's out there, I used them for years and still own them and love 'em. While AA's from the Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry are the "Acura" of this hobby, they are by no means necessary to succeed.

PCing for 3 straight days often leads to sleep punctuated by explosions.
i just want to be able to get it done faster. those two can only to 6 spawnbags every 5 hours. 12/day.

I just checked and it only holds 4 half gallons but there is a little room left where you could probably stash a quart jar, or some half pints or whatever.

I almost have that exact same pressure cooker too, only I have the 18 Qt version. I can fit 7 Qt jars in there, so it's plenty big enough for me.
I picked it up for just under $50 on clearance from WalMart. They were trying to clear out all their canning stuff to make room for Christmas, I just happened to be there at the right time. I'm sure it's not up to the same high standards as AA, but I've been very pleased with it so far.

I like this unit better than my Mirro 92022. For one it heats a lot faster because the seal doesn't leak on the heat up. The Mirro, even with a new seal, leaked a lot of steam until the seal would seat. And the Mirro had thicker walls. I am not a fan of thick walls or bigger-than-required cookers because they take so long to heat up. I also like the rocker better than the giggle weight or the toggle (from what I read about toggle at least because I never used one). I never stay home for the cooking process, and the rocker is almost silent. The giggle weight, on the other hand, is a bit louder especially as it releases more steam. The toggle might be nice, but I would be afraid as the content heated up, the unit would become too pressurized. For example I can imagine that I'd adjust it to 15 PSI with the toggle in the first 30 minutes, I'd go to work for 4 hours, and when I came the hot insides with the same heat input would drive the pressure dangerously high. Basically, with the AA and a toggle it sounds like people actually babysit their cookers, and I would never want to do that. I almost never babysit my cooker. 90% of the time I leave for work, so the rocker and the giggle allow the cooker to stay pressurized just perfectly without worrying about the unit getting too hot as the content heats up.
