want to make sure I am doing everything right, this will be my first time
so a couple of questions
I will be using some 1/2 pint jars that have been used before, with new tops, should I sterilize them before puting the verm mix in, then sterilize again? or is one time after the mix good enough? Wheen sterilizing with pot and lid on stove for 1 hr. , what temps to put it on? will a rag at the botton of the pot, be enough to rest the jars on and not 'cook' the substrate?
ok my terrarium is a rubbermaid container about 2 1/8 x 1 3/8 feet wide, and 1 feet deep and will hold around 6 cakes, I will use perlite and water to make humidity.
I will be using a 20 watt. fluorescent grow light, for thier light source, is 20 watts ok?
and when drying, will the fan-tek be enough to dry them? By letting them sit in front of a fan.

I dump all my used jars in Bleach/water and let them sit then rinse them off and let them air dry. Have had minimal contams so it can't hurt.
Before I got my pressure cooker I used a towel on the bottom of a pot and had no probs
Let the water come to a boil on high then turn it down so it keeps boiling but doesn't boil voilently and splash up over your jars.
And as far as the light goes they say that as long as you can see them they have enough light. I use no light just the light in my room and it's off while I sleep.
And the fan will work to dry them but it's better to use a dessicant just to make sure there is no moisture content left in the shrooms.
I use the top of my monitor for drying as the gentle heat from it dries them cracker dry in about 6 hours

Hey, I just saw that nobody has responded to you so I thought I'd help you out as best I can. I'm very new at this too so I can only help a on a couple of things. As far as the temp of the water on the stove, I don't think there's an exact temp, just so it boils, and you might be suprized at how low you will need to set the burnner to keep the water boiling. I set mine on Med-High, until it started to boil, but then it was bubbling way too much, and I set it on low for the rest of the hour and it continued to boil the whole time. As far as sterilizing your jars goes, I would just make sure that they are clean, because the whole point of boiling them is to sterilize them. But I was like you and paranoid about getting everything sterilized, I kept a bottle of rubbing alcohol and a clean rag with me and wiped down just about everything.

i'd go ahead and sterilize them before and after. i always wash them thoroughly and clean with alcohol before i fill 'em back up for another round. i'm not sure it's necessary, but the more sterile environment you provide, the better luck you'll have.
i think it's also a good idea to sterilize needles between jars. it can be a pain in the ass if you're innoculating 20 jars, but an extra two minutes of precaution can keep you from a several-week setback.
