Wooden Dowel In center of cake
    #637410 - 05/20/02 07:40 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

ok maybe im confused but in a bunch of pics I have seen it looks
like a wooden dowel is inserted into the middle of a cake...

why is that?

does it help with keeping the cakes moist?

whats the deal?

thanks
indicaz

No I think your tripping.

I dont see it much, but, if you're talking about a straw inserted into the top of the cake, you can actually add water by filling htat up, to hydrate the cake. I never thought it was needed, but you might as well try it to see how it works for you...

Best to do it after the 2nd or 3rd flsuh Id imagine.

Ahhhh, do you know how beneficial this is?

I just read somewhere else that someone puts there cakes in a pie pan and leaves them in 1/2 inch water..... technically it sounds feasible... wouldnt that just do the same thing? or is the straw better?

thanks

I am fairly certain you are talking about an adaption of the PF TEK. When you are making the cake in the jar you fill the jar with 1/2 inch of substrate then put in a dowel or high lighter (3/4 diameter) and fill the jar within 1 inch of the top then take out the dowel add damp vermiculite in the hole. Then add 1/2 inch of substrate and then finally half inch vermiculite. Then follow normal procedure. This way you can inject water into this core as moisture can travel through it easier than it can substrate and mycelium apparently. The only problem is you cannot see if it is contaminated from the needle in the core.

You can read about this in the Shroomery on how to grow mushrooms they have a really useful document.
