Nice.

It's always cool to get something free that you can use.

How fine are the woodchips?

I've read cautions on using such wood chips if they were near a busy road. In theory the trees might have been contaminated with heavy metals from automobile exhaust, and I'm pretty sure mushrooms can transfer heavy metals from the substrate into their fruitbodies. If someone else can confirm that though I would like to know as well, I've resisted getting such wood clippings for this reason only.

Fuel hasn't been leaded for years, but if it's an older tree, your theory definitely is something to be taken into consideration.

I'd also think that the chips were from all sorts of different trees. Some of the chips may not be suitable for what you're trying to use them for. Like pines, spruces, exc. mixed in with hardwoods.

The chips would be the same as the tree they just cut down if it was from the top of the pile. the lead would be higher in road side trees.

In mycelium running it says that lead is less soluble in a neutral Ph and most mushrooms do not actively concentrate lead. Hope this helps.
p.s. I would use them It can only go very wrong

Just for an FYI, another good source are wood trimming and removing services. A local friend had a cottonwood removed and apparently the guy who did the job mulched up all the limbs and gives it away to a local nursery. For a case of beer he would probably drop of as many loads as I would want, and they would be from a known tree type and probably not located near a road.
