Last check before sterilizing starts? Please Help
    #637300 - 05/20/02 06:14 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I wanted to make a post before I sterilized my 1/2 pint jars. Just let me know if I did everything correctly. I have 10 jars, each contains a mixture of 1/2cup Verm, 1/4cup BRF, 1/4cup Tap Water. I filled until about a half inch from top and filled the rest with dry Verm. I then places the lid, which has a hole in each side of the lid, with the rubber side down. Screwed on and then placed a layer of aluminium foil on top. I'm about to sterilize, which my pot will hold 6 jars tight, but I figure I'll do 5 and then 5 tomorrow. Just want to get some input to save me from contams. Also I plan on putting a wash cloth on the bottom of the pot, and fillin with tap water until it is about half way up the jars, and keep a quiet boil, for one hour. Leave the lid on and wait will tomorrow in order to remove them.

Thank You
Squeeky

Just let me know if I'm doing something wrong, please

Sounds good excepet you want the rubber seal up and if I were you id boil for about 1.5-2 hours instead of 1.

It don't matter what way you put the rubber seal.

Putting the rubber seal down will cause it to seal the jar making it difficult to remove the lid for birthing. So why not have the rubber seal up. Is it that hard? It IS what is recommended by everybody. But, if you want to seal your cake in the jar, go ahead an put the rubber seal down.

well unfortunitly I already have them ready with aluminium foil and ready for the pot, so I guess this time I'll have to leave the seal down, next time I'll turn it up. As for the length of boiling, I've been told there is a too long, but as above suggested is 1.5-2 hours and most teks say 1. I have the patience casue I want to do this right. So if no one else warns me I'm going to go for 2 hours.

2 hours may possibly cause your substrate to dry out. even if it does not dry you will be drasticlyy changing your water ratio in your recipe. stick to the tek, for the first time at least.
