TOR

I've been a user of tor for a while now, but I just recently installed torpark browser. For one thing I noticed its extremely slow, and it crashes my firewall even after I gave it "super trusted rights", which in turn causes a reboot.
I did notice on the tor park browser though it displays the live IP. So I guess my question is, is it still effective while running on regular Firefox (no live ip display) with torbutton installed and using Privoxy?

It should be if every thing is setup right, and although torpark is slow trust me it is secure!!!

Why can you? Because it was designed to catch puppets, not prevent legitimate users from posting anonymously.

For the most part, yes. It's still possible to remain anonymous if you use a private proxy server, but not everyone has access to one. As I said in WA&F:
Quote:
I'm not thrilled about blocking TOR and open proxies, but it's starting to become necessary if we want to maintain any kind of accountability on the BB. Trolls and puppets are becoming more tech-savvy, and username or IP bans barely slow them down. By requiring a valid IP to register or post, we regain a level of control over who can access the site. This is kind of essential for a community of our size.
Note that the restrictions only affect public, unsecured proxy servers, which can be (ab)used by anyone. Private servers still work fine. And you can still browse the board using a proxy, it's only registering and posting which are disabled. But again, I'm not saying this is ideal, it's just something we were kind of forced into doing. Blame the malicious puppets.

So are you saying that since I can post that my proxy is useless?

No, since you have over 50 posts you don't get checked for an open proxy.

I think the annoyance that moderators/administration might face in banning and tracking puppets is less important an having an entire post career that is anonymous. mods/admin are in position to do such - that is their job - if they cannot handle it, give the job to someone that can. I think security is far more important and users should be allowed to post anonymous from day one.
Here's one solution that I find acceptable: allow puppets used for cult and growlogs (as cleared in advance in accordance with the admin polices) to be able to use tor from day one.

Yeah you bring up a valid concern and you're actually not the only person to mention the problem with grow puppets... I'm thinking that the best solution might be to disable the proxy check on registration, and only invoke it if a new user tries to post in a non-cultivation forums.
But you're missing the point... you say "mods/admin are in position to [ban and track puppets], that is their job - if they cannot handle it, give the job to someone that can". How are we in a position to track and ban puppets if you would take away the tools we need to do the job? We can't peer through someone's screen and verify their real identity you know. Banning someone on a "hunch" isn't good enough, we need evidence. And puppets are getting very adept at circumventing our traditional methods of detection. So I understand your point, but I don't think the issue is quite as simple as you make it out to be. Anyway, limiting the proxy check to the community forums sounds like it would probably be the best compromise so I made the change.

yeah, that makes sense. I was unaware how puppets were dealt with these days.
