the irony of woman
    #6362334 - 12/12/06 04:45 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

she doesn't want to seem vulnerable, like she has to depend on someone or something, but she wants to depend on someone. sometimes I refer to it as the "knight in shining armor" complex.

I have known some fiercely independent women in my time.

I think all women do this to a certain extent.

fiercely independent women are generally the ones the knight must rescue after all.. the dragon abducts the princess that runs away from the castle.

that's a good read. women are "hardwired" to be dependent on men.

i can appreciate how you might make such a clever deduction.

however...

i am a woman, and i never try to mask my vulnerabilities. i cry at hallmark commercials-- especially, but not limited to, when i am on the rag. i'm scared of spiders. my boyfriend "rescues" me from all of the ones that creep into our apartment. and i definitely require cuddling when i am sick.

i have never met another human being who didn't have vulnerabilities though, so i really don't feel "bad" about mine or like there is any need to pretend like i don't have them. and the only things i guess i "depend" on my boyfriend for are honesty, respect, and support (in terms of encouragement and advice). otherwise, i take care of myself...

My sister has always been afraid of spiders too...then in 5th grade the "reward" for doing all your homework was the watching a movie, that year the movie was arachnaphobia. The "reward" was mandatory and despite her fear they didn't excuse her.  :mad2:  Her fear increased 10 fold, to the point where she actually got sick whenever spiders were around.  She's since gotten better, but is still scared of them.....it still pisses me off that the bastards made her sit through that movie. That age you're still just a little kid...... :nonono:

My roommates and I took on a subletter who was afraid of basically all non-mammals.

We didn't learn this until she started waking us up in the middle of the night to kill whatever it was she had just found in the bathroom.

The funny thing is (we have a 4-bedroom apartment) there were 2 guys and 1 other girl living there, and she NEVER woke up the other girl to kill the various insects she found over the course of the 3 months she was with us.

Note: I do not live in filth, it was the summer and a few insects a month are going to happen.

Yeah, she was a good roommate in basically every other way, so we never really did anything about it.

I liked your post though, I had completely forgotten about ridiculous elementary-schoolisms, like "mandatory rewards".

that's fucked up.

yeah i've seen that movie too.  i closed my eyes through most of it.  it made my fear 10 X worse, like you said about your sister.  i forget why i was forced to watch it... it wasn't in school or anything... but, whatever the reason, i couldn't sleep through the night for weeks afterwards.

to this day, if i see a spider on television, i'll swear i can feel it crawling on me.  it's awful.

whenever i see a spider in the apartment, i exclaim, "i need a boy to come kill this!"...

...but in all fairness, i live with 2 boys, and we already know that i'm not going to kill it, so, come on...
