the theosophical society

i was a member of this society, for just a year, about 13 years ago.
used to be fairly itinerant and soon moved on, letting my membership lapse.
to be honest, i don't really recommend joining, what i do suggest is make use of their facilities.
most cities have a 'lodge'. most lodges have libraries which are open to the public.
you will find a lot of rare and unusual books there.
sometimes they have bookshops too, which are usually quite cheap.
its kind've a good place to hang out on a rainy day.
they aren't very hip, the place will probably look and smell like a retirement home.
they run a lot of courses, usually members only, but sometimes open to the public, a great variety of topics ranging from kabbala to liberal catholicism to tantric sex.
the society has had some colorful and controversial founders and members, such as h.blavatsky, who kept claiming various psychic abilities and getting caught cheating. or charles leadbetter who taught masturbation during health ed class to high-school boys (back in the early 1900's), defending himself to his detractors by claiming it was a healthy way for young men to release pent up energy.

these are the aims of the society-
To form a nucleus of the Universal Brotherhood of Humanity, without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or colour.
To encourage the study of Comparative Religion, Philosophy and Science.
To investigate unexplained laws of Nature and the Powers latent in Man.

I went to a fair they had in the town of Wheaton Illinois (or somewhere close). They had it on their property which was a cool old house. They did have an impressive collection of material inside. (The atmosphere inside did seem a little stale) They also seemed really open-minded and friendly. The atmosphere of the outdoor fair was kind of a mix between an art fair and a convention of religious beliefs. There were some hippies wandering around. People were just conversing and enjoying the fair.

i should've mentioned that you can meet some pretty interesting people there. may not be into their shrooms but many have a lifetime of study, research and experience to share, perspectives that you don't hear everyday.
