Turvenuija said: Good timing on this weird thread resurrection, I bought some powdered rue and plan on taking 2-3g rue + 2g liberty caps with it tomorrow or Saturday. I've been reading conflicting stories about nausea caused by unextracted rue. Those with a lot of experience with it, how bad is it actually? I'll take them as separate teas 20-60 mins apart and I'll have some fresh ginger (helps with nausea apparently?) and a bucket for emotional support.
This is based off of my personal experience. At first when your body has nothing to fear, Syrian Rue is fine. In fact, it made me hungry multiple times. But it does produce nausea I know for a fact. Because physiologically I started getting more and more nauseous just by the smell of it. Those last couple caps I had of Syrain Rue... The smell of them was enough to turn my stomach and make me nauseous just being near the box that I kept them in. That’s how powerfully the nausea works on you. The smell alone is enough to make your body start getting nauseous again.
I use pure harmalla extract or pills. I’m so happy that I’m not using the actual Syrian rue pill capsule anymore. Just keep marijuana nearby. You’re gonna need it.
Oh boy, i know this all too well lol. Same thing happened to me, just the smell of the Rue, the sight of the Rue powder, instantly would make me queasy and wanna gag and throw up lol. It can be rather deterring but i know the magick that Rue holds so i look past the nausea and vomiting and all that, but it is quite the pungent seed.
With that said, there are two ways that i go about dealing with the nausea/vomiting, i either take the Rue/Harmalas regularly (usually daily, at night, but a few times a week seems to also be fine ime) which will build up the reverse tolerance and with that the side-effects including the nausea/vomiting/diarrhea will go away and the bodyload will clean up and the motor impairment goes away and then even heavy dosages of Harmalas will feel pretty clean and are functional and won't cause anymore nausea/vomiting.
Or i use Limonene, which is a compound found in a wide variety of plants and essential oils, and is a major component of Lemon essential oil which people have touted as an anti-nausea remedy though they attributed it to Beta-Pinene, it's actually the Limonene, and so i recommend trying pure Limonene, get the pure oil form and not the supplement form because the supplement form is too high of a dosage at 500mgs to 1 gram, whereas you want more along the lines of 6 to 10 drops, 8 to 10 drops particularly seemed to help for me but 6 drops may even be enough, which would equate to about 108 to 180mgs, and so you just put the Limonene drops into a capsule using a dropper, and take it at the same time as the Rue/Harmalas, and it will remove most if not all of the nausea/vomiting ime, and i've gotten good feedback so far about it and that it works for others, so it might be something worth trying. The Limonene also seems to clean up some of the bodyload to a degree i think, it feels nice though ime.
As for things like Ginger or Zofran or Peppermint, they all act as Serotonin 3 receptor antagonists, which can be useful for nausea/vomiting, and some folks claim that it helps with the Aya or mushrooms or what not, but ime anytime i've tried Ginger or Zofran or Peppermint with Aya or even the Rue/Harmalas, idk, i find that it really doesn't help me with the nausea/vomiting but it also alters things in a really weird way that i don't particularly like or get benefit from. Plus with Peppermint, there's also other properties it has, including GABA-A receptor activity which on one hand may be useful but on the other hand i feel like it dulls things down, which is contrary to what Lemon Balm does for me through it's GABAergic properties which doesn't seem to dull things down but still relaxes things and smooths things out. So as far as GABAergic properties go, Lemon Balm is great, but Peppermint not so much, ime.
And yes, Cannabis is imo/ime definitely worth having around for gut discomfort and nausea, it's a great ally.
But yeah Rue seed powder encapsulated can be a bit more rough on the gut, at least at first, but if you build up the reverse tolerance and do away with the side-effects, and get your body used to it, and plus Rue/Harmalas have anti-microbial properties and so it'll interact with the gut microbiome which needs to get used to it, and then things feel better, even with the seed powder. But extracts are nice too, i much prefer the Rue seed itself over the extracts though because the seed itself has a lot more going on and feels more natural and magickal, whereas the extract feels more isolated and medicinal, which isn't an issue for me as i can certainly use that, but as far as extracts go i prefer homemade full spectrum freebased extract, which apparently you can't buy online that i've seen, some vendors list their Harmala extracts as full spectrum but they're not truly full spectrum, they're manske'd extracts which is basically just a pure Harmaline/Harmine mix, but the true full spectrum extract also has some other alkaloid from the Rue, but it doesn't get everything, it just adds a few more compounds to the mix and makes it feel better and closer to but lighter than the seed, so i recommend making your own full spectrum Rue extract and trying that out and comparing how it feels to the manske'd Harmala extract.
