Word of Mouth = Warrant?

I've been searching but haven't been able to find this information.
If someone who is not a government employee tells the police that a person is either producing or distributing something, is that enough to get a warrant to search the suspected person's house?
This is also assuming that the person has not actually been seen by the police distributing anything. The only thing that have to go on is word of mouth.

I'm no lawyer. -----
Allot of times, no.....that is unless your a known offender, with prior convictions.
But,
Word of mouth is enough(depending on the source of said words) to bring you under preliminary investigation.
They run simple surveillance a night or two. They may do a trash pull.
If you have people in and out of your house, or if things look shady at your place, THEN they get a warrant.
If you have any drug related ANYTHING in your trash(seeds, stems, bags with residue, pipes, used screens, etc)....THEN they get a warrant.
I'm sure there are always exceptions to the rule.
Observe golden rule NUMBER ONE: TELL NO ONE!
and you should for the most part, be OK.

There would only be you and your memories... the choices you've made, and the people you've touched. If this world were to end there would only be you and him and no-one else. " .............. "MAN! You know there aint no such thing as left over crack!"

Alright. So they would mainly the monitor everything that went in and out of the residence in order to try to get a warrant.
Anyone else have any comments on this?

They could peep through windows... going through trash is a big one. Speaking with neighbors perhaps.

That is all great news. Could they stop cars that leave from the person's house?

Cars are just bad places to be if you're relying on the justice of the legal system to get away with something. If they want to stop you, you'll get stopped, and there's a good chance they'll get away with it.

Depends upon the local laws. I have a friend that is a cop in New York City and he said that for New York, this would not be enough to get a warrant. He said that NYPD must have three different "things" before a judge will grant a warrant. These things might be three different buys by three different informants at three different times, etc.
I had a friend in Florida get raided (with a warrant) after somebody told the cops that he was growing mushrooms. Only problem was that he was growing edible mushrooms for some of the top chefs in the area and had never touched illegal mushrooms.
It all depends upon where you live.

A common thing they'll do when it's word of mouth is... depending on which "mouth" their information is coming from, send a guy in to buy something. Only a problem if you're selling.

the short answer is "yes". different communities and judges have different standards for what constitutes probable cause. in some places, a single "witness" with specific information is more than enough for police to obtain a warrant. you may as well assume you live in one of those places.
if depends also on who the informant is. if it's some random junkie, the cops probably are not going to go for it. a tip from a utility worker or irate ex-girlfriend about specific items and locations is usually enough for a warrant though.
don't tell anyone anything and the only person you have to worry about talking to the police is you.

I remember reading somewhere that TWO people snitching on you is enough to convince a judge to issue a warrant. Your best bet is to ask a lawyer, though, as even if what I read is true, it may not apply the same way in different geographic locations.
