Spawn bags - Seeking the advice of old hands.
    #6353744 - 12/10/06 11:16 AM (17 years, 2 months ago)

I've been using jars for the past three years, and decided that spawn bags were the way to go from now on.

My first question lies in the selection of rye berries. I can find local "winter rye" around my area, but I didn't know if this kind of rye was introduced to any pesticides, and whether or not it would be suitable for my projects. Am I ok to proceed with it?

I originally used rye for the last year or two using a soak and simmer, but I didn't have rigorous growth or complete colonization until days 15-20. I'm not sure if it was the rye that I was using, which was a sponsors brand, or if I was just unlucky.

Secondly, I don't understand how much rye should go into a spawn bag. I'm using an AA921, so my first attempt failed because the bags expanded and it was incredibly hard to seal them after PC'ing. I also learned that scotch tape isin't the tape to use in a PC, hence why it melted, so I was also trying to get a hint at which tapes I can use to tidy up the flaps of the bags themselves.

Third, how the hell do you fold the bags to look so tidy and neat? Mine came out looking disasterous, and when I came on here to look for a tek, I couldn't find one that demonstrated flap folding and bag placement. And should I be elevating the bags in the PC so I have better access to the flaps?

And as far as how many cc's of inncoulant to use, I am also baffled as well. My original intention was to hydrate 10 full quarts of rye, and then after expansion, split the difference between two spawn bags, hence making each spawn bag 10 full quarts. I then planned to use 25 cc's to innculate each bag.

I know there's a lot of questions here, and I usually seek the information myself, but when I'm using $15-30 of materials each run, my failures become costly.

Anyone who would help would greatly be appreciated.

I fold the tops of the bags accordion style, with a tyvek sleeve in each bag running the length of the folds. By folding accordion style, as the bag expands it allows steam to escape, then when it cools, it retains it's shape and the tyvek sleeve filters any air that might enter the bag. You can place a glass dinner plate on top of the bags to keep them from unfolding.

I wouldn't fill the bags more than 1/2 full, regardless of the size bag. You don't want it tidy and neat, except during the PC cycle. Before sealing the bag after sterilization, be sure to inflate the top part with as much air as you can get into it from your laminar flow hood. Personally, I use metal wire to tie the bags shut rather than impulse sealing.

I am intrigued by this as I have a ton of spawn bags sitting around from my "fruit in the bag grow"....Needless to say I will NEVER be doing that again so its good to know I can use spawn bags with wire and not need to order an impulse sealer

Any other answers? Especially pertaining to the local winter rye seeds?
