What plant would you genetically modify, and how?
    #6355747 - 12/10/06 08:43 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

Would you splice "the THC gene" into some other common plant? (there probably isn't a single gene for THC, BTW)

Modify Cannabis to look different?

Increase it's potency?

How about some GM HBWR seeds that contain pure, clean "LSD-25"?

I'd make Salvia self-fertile and auto-flowering. Abundant seeds would definately come in handy when it is scheduled.

Tomacco!!!

But seriously my friend was always talking about THC laced tomato plants. I always thought it would be bad ass for pizza sauce. Get you high and satiate the munchies all in one go.

fartless oranges?

banana and mango are kinda perfect the way they are :smirk:

Loading lettuce with a percent of so of LSA (primarily for lab people) or turning its juice into Papaver somniferum juice.

This way you can put it in a baggy, put it in and out the freezer a couple of times and you then have a separated juice which either dries outto yield several grams of opium or extract a couple 100 mg lysergic acid amides for the lab boys.

It would be more interesting though to design some synthetic genetics capable of LSD biosynthesis. This way an iceberg lettuce would contain about 10.000 or so hits, juice and drip the juice onto sugarcubes, 1 drop = 50mcg or 1mg/ml :crazy2: The way lettuce grows and produces seed all psychedelic problems are soon solved. It would give head lettuce a whole new meaning..

Also interesting would be turboyeast genetically modified to deposit Mescaline, DMT or lysergic acid amides in a substrate consisting of water, fert salts and sugar. This ought to be possible.
Yeast producing butyrolactone would probably also be feasible.

That would probably be the easiest to do amongst all the ideas listed here.

My favorite is the pure LSD plant. Either Morning Glory or Woodrose would probably be the best candidates, or maybe ergot. I think that one would be harder to do. GM Sassafrass with MDMA in the roots would be nice, but also very difficult.

Some possible projects that may actually be within reach:

Making a plant more potent and/or productive at producing a substance it already produces, either by making it grow faster, making it produce more of the chemical, or make the part of the plant that the chemical comes from larger (Such as with bigger buds, or larger trichimes on a Cannabis plant)

Changing the look of a plant to make it nearly undetectable. A very simple example of this would be the Duckfoot strain of Cannabis. It's leaves look like a duck footprint, and the plants don't really look like Cannabis until it begins flowering. This could include splicing the genes to produce the drug from one plant to another. You might could make a hops plant that produces THC, a cactus that produces Ibogaine, or a yeast that produces Psilocybin.

Fixing a defect, such as salvia's inability to produce seeds.

The first step to any of this stuff is sequencing the genomes of the plants/fungi we want to work with.

There are plenty of yeasts and algae that have been sequenced already. These could serve as hosts for drug producing genes if we can just find the genes, figure out how they work, and transplant them into a new organism in a way that the organism will actually use the genes and no other functions of the host organism's cells disrupt the interaction of chemicals and enzymes within the cell. Piece of cake. It could probably be done for less than $50mill.

I would take the genes from a venus fly trap and modify them to make the traps huge and able to eat small animals like rats and mice.

Exactly what I was thinking. I think that ergot would be easier to genetically modify.

Two words:

Opium buds.

Imagine seeing raw white poppy goo oozing over the trichromes of a white widow. I would spend the rest of my life on the stuff.
