Guided Spore Disbursement

I noticed something interesting as I watched Leucocoprinus birnbaumii mushrooms fruiting in my terrarium. The terrarium is half aquatic and half soil. When the mushrooms first appeared, they where in the center of the soil side. When a mushroom released its spores they would always be scattered to one side not directly below the mushroom. The spores would always be aimed towards the water. The mushrooms are now fruiting along the wall that divides the water and soil. They somehow knew that’s where they wanted to be. Has anyone else observed this?

i'm assuming you're trying to make a little self sufficient ecosystem(based on the mushroom type and picture) i can't see too clearly, but you have basically a pond, some plants in soil and a common flowerpot mushroom... while i think the spores dispersing towards the water is quite an interesting discovery, i have a hard time understanding what you are going for in this terrarium and think you should elaborate on the project. while it is interesting I also cannot personally think of any way this could useful to cultivation, although it may be useful in understanding our fungi friends habits...

I was not trying to make a habitat for mushrooms. The potted plant shrooms just popped up one day. This is not likely useful information to anyone. I was just amazed that the mushroom chose to release its spores in the direction of the highest humidity and moister.

It's most likely just a convection current set up by having water on one side and soil on the other. If you have any sort of a light cycle the water will have a much larger heat holding capacity and set up a convection current at night drawing spores towards it.
