Second PF Attempt (PICS)
    #6329242 - 12/03/06 01:08 AM (17 years, 2 months ago)

So I finally decided to post my grow. I inoculated the two cakes with amazonian spores on 10/21. I inoculated 10 ecuadoiran on 10/24. I put the cakes in the FC chamber 11/15. Today is now two weeks in the FC. The temp is usually low 70's and I give FEA about 5 times a day. The FC gets natural sunlight from a nearby window.

I noticed that the cakes were getting overal too dry to the first week. I mist more often now. I sometimes just spray to wall and let the mist fall.

Also within the last 6-8 days the mycelium has been thickening up. I notice little Mycelium  balls forming on the bottom of the cakes.

These are the first set of pics.

UPDATE: It took me a few days to actually post. But since then the little mycelium balls decribed above have started to pin. I have 6 very little pins and 1 bigger but still small pin. And one more cake has 1 nice size pin and one small one. A grand total of 9. I am very optimistic.

I am going to wait to on the pics of those pins...

I don't have a macro lense on my DC but does anyone else know of how to take clear close up shots of my mushies? It's a decent camera. Canon A550. (I believe thats the model but I honestly could be wrong.) Has 5meg pixel and a good optical zoom. It takes great picture until I go close up. I have tried the manual focus and digging through the menus but I have no luck so, but I am reluctant. So let me what you think on the camera deal and some good technique to close ups if my camera is cabable. Anyway very off topic....

So I will update when I have something bigger to show. Peace!!!!

you might not have a macro lens per se, but likely have a macro mode. look for the little flower icon - either a button on the camera, or somewhere within the menus. i have an older canon digital cam (an S10, its only 2.1MP, going on like 6 years old now i think) and i have a macro mode:

so if my "ancient" cam can do it, im sure yours can! even in macro mode, you need to back off a good couple of inches (and can use zoom a little bit to compensate and get back in close. takes a few tries somtimes!)

right on cc. i like the example pic and thanks for the advice.

UPDATE: Pins have began to grow faster. I finally got the FC at the right conditions and the pins have really taken off in the last 24 hrs. I have some very decent size pins pop up over night and everything looks promising. I will see if I can't figure out the camera deal tomorrow to take pics of those pins that have hopefully gotten bigger.

Question about aborts... The very first pin that popped up appear up out of nowhere over night. It has very slowely grown but the pin is a really dark brown while all other cakes have golden caps. The small stalk looks very healthy but is growing slower than the rest. I will see if tomorrow reveals anything new and post some pics. Let me know what you thinks.

You were right CC. I just had to play with the camera to get the right setting. Here are the the pins that really have developed in the last 24hrs.

This one is my favorite. From last night to this morning it has doubled in size. I hope this rate of growth continues.

Before yesterday the was only really 1 pins and everything else was just very very small. This have grown in 36hrs and will hopefully be munchin out this weekend.

Quick question about on of my FC. It is a plastic bin with perlite. I have drilled two small holes in the bin and stuffed with polyfill. Should I drill two more is two holes enough? It is a relatively small container. I can take a pic if needed.

HEY WE HAVE AN UPDATE: A LITTLE MYCOPORN!!!

Well I am unimpressed for my first succesfull grow. I just picked 3g today. They were two very skinny but big caps for the stalk (amazonians i think). They were small and shitty to take a pic of. But here are the latest...

Does anyone have an idea of the weight of this right now? Just curious. I would think no more but hopefully 15g. Also I has amazonian and EQ in the same FC. I think this is an EQ but can someone else verify?

Here is some other pins that popup of a little later than the one above. The original pin slowed and the second one sprung up out of nowhere. I have high hopes but time will tell.

MY OVERALL SYNOPSISE ON THE PF TEK

It was a very good tool for beginners to learn on. It shows you the fundemental elements of growing. It also really teaches one a great deal of patience. Now the only thing to do is improve. They weight I recieved after the first flush sucked off one amazonian cake(i pressume but might have the two backwards). The problem I find with pf cakes is hydration. Mine dried out way too fast and a bulk substrate is an order. I doubt I will be using cakes again in the near future. After this I might use pf cakes again but only as a spawn(and that's only for shits and giggles).

I have a couple of left over PF cakes crumbled and in ziplock bags recovering. Monday I am going to spawn to some coir or case as cake. What do you guys recommend?

Spawn 'em to some coir. Thats exactly what I did, and so far my Puerto Ricans are fruiting nicely.

It's your first successful PF tek. Your next ones will look great. Congratulations, and spawn some of those to some coir w/ the next batch too!

Will do. I have a couple of PE LCs brewing right now. As soon as that is done I am going to inoculate as much grain as possible then spawn to a couple of monotubs with hpoo or straw.

ON A BRIGHTER NOTE. If these way out to atleast 20g (including the 3g I already picked) I am going to eat them tonight by myself (i don't know why but after all this time I have never tripped solo, its time).
