Can straw be used as a reishi nitrogen supplement?

For instance, 90% wood chips/sawdust 10% straw?

I've grown reishi on 100% straw before, but haven't used it as a suppliment. Straw is poor by itself by the way, but antlers will form. You can grow great reishi on sawdust/chips supplimented with gypsum and wheat or rice bran.

Hey, straw is a carbon source, but not much of a nitrogen source. That's why bran is used to supplement wood and straw recipes- bran's higher in nitrogen (protein).

The straw might make the mix airier, and that might affect how the mycelia react to the mix. Everything's worth a try at least once.

That's correct. Cured straws for the most part a poor source for nitrogen. With a couple of exceptions, like Alphalfa exc. Your basic wheat and rye straws are poor though. If you're having a hard time finding brans, check the grocery store in the section they sell Quaker Oats. I was surprised to see they had a box of un-processed oat bran for sale by Quaker for only $2. A good sized box as well.
