Nice one dude... I'm a cactus noob but I managed to order a Pedro cutting off Ebay, let it dry over the tip, and keep it alive a year and now it's pupping!
The little baby pedro looks so fat and sweet... It's easy to do cactus, it just takes time :un:

i think its safe to say that you can grow peyote from seed.
you can buy seeds in canada legally, beyond that, the possesion of them is illegal in the states.

thanks for the compliments,
these guys were 2-3 yrs old when grafted, in mid 2004, except for the first lopho, which was grafted in mid 2003.
its a hell of a long time for grafted guys to blossom isn´t it? at least they´re big as hell.

What's nice about them is they look not only big, but old as well. That first one looks like a grandfather peyote button.

hey man, do you know any good sites to buy semi-aged peyote? around 9-10 years old or so? Ive been looking on the net, I live in canada and most places look like they sell cactus balloons blown full w/ water.

Site rules say that sources for products illegal in the US (where the servers are) cannot be posted. However, hopefully someone can PM you some information, as it is indeed perfectly legal where you live. In fact, it's legal in nearly every country besides the US and Mexico (the only two countries peyote naturally grows in).

Those balloons you've seen are probably grafted cacti that have been put into the soil to look non-grafted. They might even still have a small bit of pereskiopsis under the lophophora for roots, as its own roots take quite a while to grow out. Still, the root will eventually form, and you could grow it out, or slice off heads that pop up, and root them naturally, or wait until it produces seed, and plant those.

I suppose I just think you're lucky to have them in shops, even if many places do pull a bit of a scam.

speed growing cacti for ornamentals is hardly what i would call a scam.

you know its funny. peyote is legal in canada to grow, buy, sell, dry, AND consume. If you check the law, you'll find that any product of peyote is exempt from the schedule III status of mescalane. it makes me wonder how far the law goes to draw the line tho.

could it be legal to have pure mescalane as long as it can be proven it came from lophophora williamsii? i suppose the law would cosider that an extraction would make it cease to be the expempted plant.

wierd tho, i always thought it was legal to grow as an ornamental. but the law clearly states that peyote is in no way scheduled, and mescalaine, in the form of peyote is also non scheduled

I only meant a scam if it is sold as (with a price to match) an older cacti with no indication of being previously grafted (or even still currently grafted under the soil).

Yeah, it kinda is a scam because it is ridiculously $$$ for a very small peyote in shops located here. But luckily us Canadians can buy Peyote! They should legalize pot here as well, or at least legalize it in BC so I can road trip there, allong with all you Americans

If it is in fact grown from seed, it isn't too unreasonable to have a small one for a pretty high price tag. It takes a lot of time to grow them out. I wouldn't part with such cacti for a small fee (or at all, really).

Pereskiopsis grafts, on the other hand, can be done in batches of hundreds with 1-2 centimeter results in months under lights. If *these* are selling for 50+ a piece, as I imagine they are in some areas... scam might not be the appropriate word, but it isn't worth the price tag to me.

Your loph looks like it has at least been on its own roots for a long while, if not forever.

Just because it's a little inflated compared to wild ones doesn't mean it was grafted. Just the nature of lophs in cultivation. I do like the wild look though, sometimes completely level with the ground.

nicely done.

just curious, how do you get it to flower? im getting an order of some lophophoras soon and i want to flower them to get me some seeds as soon as it is possible, im ordering a 6cm mature williamsii for starters and if i like that ill order some pre mature ones for grafting.

also how old are those?- how long does it take to get them to flower when they are grafted?
