Rye Vs. WBS

Which of these substrates produces the largest overall yields and colonizes the fastest?

wbs has more spawn points because the grains are smaller. i also think that it colonizes a little faster. i prefer wbs

I prefer WBS for spawn, never used either as a sub.

WBS hydrates fine with a 24 hour soak. Rye takes longer, and I generally resort to simmering.

Even properly hydrated rye seems to begin drying out faster than WBS.

WBS has more inoculation points (smaller seeds)

Next time I'm at the feed store, I'm going to see if they have bags of milo, I think that stuff by itself would probably rock.

Rye is supposedly more nutritious so it makes a better substrate. WBS has more grains per volume so more inoculation points making it a better spawn medium. I took agar's advice and mix the two at about 60% WBS to 40% rye. Works great for me.
