Using Perlite as a Substitute?
    #6340563 - 12/06/06 01:22 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

Ok heres the deal.

1st time growing and I was struck for Vermiculite. Family member told me they are basicly the same thing. So in my casing mix I used perlite as a substitute.

I had 1 big jar and 6 mini ones in my closet for about 5 days and nothing.

Put em up in the attic where is it warmer and after a week 1/2 Ive noticed a quarter sized patch of Mycelium. VERY slow it seems , but at least its going. On the other hand the smaller jars show no sign of grow whatsoever.

Has anyone used perlite in their mix before? Im wondering if even the mycelium will be able to spread throught the bigger jar?

peace,

Sounds like you and tihkalpihkal need to get together and have a perlite party, you like it so much!

They are not even remotely similar, so your family member relayed unreliable information. If you didn't have verm in the first place, what did you use for the substrate? I only ask because you mention the perlite only in "your casing", which shouldn't be entirely detrimental in the context of an otherwise nutrient rich jar.

Some lady at Home Depot tried to tell me that too when I was getting ready for my first grow, but I had read about that here on the forums. I think the reason people say they are the same is because you can add both to potting soil to increase water retention. Doesn't work the same for myc though.

Unless you're telling the person at Home Depot, or your family member, exactly what you need the product for, I don't see why you would be asking for their advice. They're going to assume you need it for whatever the product is commonly used for (plants, etc).

Same shit happened to me. By the way, I had a hard time trying to find vermiculite too because its winter and my local nursery doesn't have any till spring. I order a 8 quart bag fromwww.yardiac.com, they are very reliable and you'll get the verm in about two days even though it's only a five dollar shipping charge.

Back when I thought that verm was necessary to grow mushrooms I remember looking EVERYWHERE for it,I never did find it and ended up ordering it online,The only time it ever did come in handy was when I used to to help me get the moisture content right when I did a cracked corn grow a while back,I have grown allot more mushrooms without verm than I ever did with it
