A Message to the Shroomery, seeking comments.

Hello and good evening. I have had idea for long, long time. The thought crossed my mind to ask for donations to get this project started... Nevermind. Still, enjoy the pictures.
Three years ago I had an idea. Why not control some heaters n' humidifiers with a computer?
And it could be done with a box that connected to the parallel port!
Of course, that prototype was messy! But indeed, the software I wrote for it was sure useful:
<b>"But there are already things out there like this!"</b> Yes, I have seen units that will control a heater based on the current temperature. (edit) I have also seen an all-encompassing box that handles temp/humidity/etc, but they cost too much ( see: <a href="https://www.mind-media.com/go.php?http://www.growtronix.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.growtronix.com</a> )
There are probably things similar to this, which are made for an industrial environment. But that's what they are, they are made for commercial applications and had a price tag that only large businesses can afford. My automation box is <b>designed with the individual in mind</b>. Three years ago I certainly couldn't afford more than $200 for a solution like this, and I certainly can't afford it now. But the ability to ensure optimal conditions for something that may return much more than $200, certainly makes the whole endeavor worthwhile.
PeaceĀ

Or you could use a good Ole thermostat. Who wants to spend several time's the money for pretty much the same results?

yes a thermostat can be bought for anysize heater, and there are far cheaper ways to mist your grow than hooking it up to a computer. you can go inside the damn thing and tamper with the switch. Or you could simply buy a 5 dollar power cord with a timer.

Im not saying it's a bad Idea I'm just saying that the same results can and are done with far less hasel and money.

Im sorry man but that is an easy and underdone project. At my university we have to make a senior project for our computer engineering degrees. People make various things, I for instance am making a robot that sorts things based off colors or shapes. But another group in my class is making a weed grow extravaganza machine. It controls humidity, water, and also minerals. It will check to see if there are any deficiencies and add accordingly. It does everything yours does, except more. Ha sorry to fuck with you but I thought you should know

Are you really gaining that much more productivity? and they have electric thermometers that record the highs and lows over a period of time, and I'm fairly certain I have seen the same for humidity readers, and they cost nearly next to nothing, I like the Plans that you have created I will just stick to the methods I'm familiar with.

if i had a ton of spare cash i would definitely be designing something similar for myself but for the moment, sterlite tubs and polyfill get the job done

If it does report a malfunction is it really gonna matter if you are not home? what if your computer crashes and it toatly shuts everything down when you are on vacation for a few days...

I really like your design. Those who know, realize the advantage of this type of intelligent automation over just simple on/off timers. Those who understand realize nothing is free not even time these days.
I read through the instructions on building your last control unit. I wanna thank you for taking the time and contributing your idea. I was going to build one myself but decided it was simply overkill for me.
I have no desire to graph or record my temperature and humidity fluctuations. I don't have a need for 8 inputs either. All I really want to control is temperature and humidity. Temperature can be controlled so easily by buying a small heater with thermostat from walmart. Humidity control gets more expensive. I haven't seen anything out there that wasn't designed for a large scale commercial mushroom farm.
So I don't even a need really to go to digital. I'm working on a simple analog design using the HM1500, 2-PUT's and an SCS controlling a relay. I'm new to this but I'm confidant I will have something working that should only cost about 50 bucks depending on how many components I already have.
