DXM in the news.
    #6335312 - 12/05/06 03:24 AM (17 years, 2 months ago)

Maybe not too big a deal, mainly a heads up.

Quote:

CHICAGO - Young people are increasingly abusing a drug found in nonprescription cough medicines that can produce hallucinogenic effects, but at a risk to their well-being, researchers said Monday.

Calls for help to California’s poison control system and around the United States rose by roughly 50 percent each year between 1999 and 2004 for reactions to the drug dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant. It's found in cough medicines by brands including Pertussin, Robitussin, Benylin, Sucrets, Trocal, Vicks 44, Delsym, Diabe-TUSS, Cough X and Creo-Terpin.

Most of the calls involved side effects suffered by youths aged 9 to 17 years that included rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, agitation, loss of muscle control and psychotic reactions, according to the report published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

Web sites that offer instructions on how to abuse legal medications have proliferated and many cough medicines containing the drug are available on the shelves of retail outlets and kept in the home, the report said.

“Preventive measures, such as placing detromethorphan-containing products behind pharmacy counters, may be an effective action to limit this increasing trend of abuse in adolescents,” study author Jodi Bryner of the University of California, San Francisco, said.

That preventetive measure will work a little bit. My friend and I stole some Robitussin one time.

If my friend wanted to do DXM I would advise him/her against it. It just seems like you're taking a big risk with this drug. The after effects are so obvious.

I loathe DXM, but it is not a very dangerous drug when compared to something like alcohol or nicotine. Although it is certainly possible, I have not heard of anybody overdosing on DXM. Almost every death attributed to DXM is actually been caused by a combination of DXM with antihistamines or MAOIs. There are some other dangers associated with DXM abuse, such as bromine poisoning. However, there are dangers associated with abuse of almost any substance, even water.

Dxm was my "gateway" (hate to use the word, but it is kinda true) into my imagination. It helped get me involved with hallucinations, dxm always reminds me of playdoe.

And shared hallucinatons as well, I remember one time me and my friend were watching his pair of boxers (have no idea of if they were clean) on top of his desk, a digi clock with red numbers was illuminating the boxers. We both saw an indian orgy of little claydoe people made of the wrinkles, formed by tossing them how ever, on his boxers. We tripped out on that for a while.

But after awhile I assosiated dxm with vomiting so much just the smell makes me gag, so now I use the robo gels ( I only do dxm maybe 2-4 times a year), but just feeling the dxm in my body also makes me gag, so dxm stoped being so fun. I remember when I would trip it always seemed as if I was super human, or in a video game. Geometery also became more, i dont know natural in my head and came easier to me. Its what got me started thinking.

I get all of the bad side effects, even when using pure DXM rather than a syrup. Horrid roboitch, lots of emesis, uncontrollable body temperature swings, massive cramps, inability to concentrate or focus, and worst of all... it leaves me literally stupid for the next few days. Perhaps I am allergic to the stuff, donno, but I don't find it fun by any stretch of the imagination.

The kind of deal where you just have to consume anything within reach to make you feel fucked up, eh? :smirk:

I have never felt the need to do this shit but maybe I am just being narrow minded. I guess I am content with smoking weed when I can't find the goods.

I've never done it either and do not feel compelled to do it at all, but could care less if anyone else did it. I was just commenting on his apparent, compulsive attitude towards consumption of something, anything...

i've experimented with it in my high school days; it's a crazy drug to say the least. :mushroom2:

i've moved on by now though. dxm is not meant to be consumed in excess. :nono:

I tried some a couple weeks ago. It was fun! No puking, no after effects. I meditated and got shot into space.

I think I did 180mg last night; it was very spiritual for me and I didn't have any side-effects besides sleeping very nicely.  It actually works better than hydrocodone for my nerve pain

DXM can be lots of fun in the right situation (for me, anyway). I took a low dose before a Trans Siberian Orchestra show last week and had a blast.
