"Who is connected to my network" prog?

I live in a building that has free wireless. Is there a prog that would allow me to see who else is connected to the same network that I am on?

Maybe I should rephrase. Not connected to my network, so to speak, but more of who is using the same router as myself. I have d/led a sniffer, close to what I was looking for but not exactly.

if ur not on a network, just a router then there is no way to tell who u are connected to unless of course ur a hacker =P...unless the router is somewhere in ur visibility range then u can just follow the cat 5 cables to find out

*sigh*
I can't seem to find "my network places" anywhere on my Solaris install. Perhaps you could tell me what to type at the unix prompt?
I guess I need to throw away the network sniffer that I wrote back in 1991, since there is no other way than "my network places" to see whats on the network.
Oh, and the "Y" key is in the center of the keyboard, near the top. The "O" key is on the same row as the "Y" key, but closer to the right side of the letters. You can use these two letters to help spell words, such as "you're" and "you" correctly. It takes an extra tenth of a second to fill out the word, and it helps present yourself as both mature and educated, rather than lazy and ignorant.
> unless of course ur a hacker
Please... never mind on the location of the letters... the lack of coherence suits you.

Yes, and "u" don't even have to be a hacker to use them. Here is a good place to start looking: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=802.11+packet+sniffer&btnG=Search
A "packet sniffer" is a program that reports the raw data that is on a network. Most packet sniffing software include filters that form the raw data into something that is readable by humans. If you are on a wireless network intended for public use, then it is almost certainly an 802.11 network.

I Seuss
In addition to his advice, you may wish to consider the following. Using a security Live CD can be an easy way to get acquainted with packet sniffers, many of which are written for a *nix platform (forigive me for assuming you use windows if that is incorrect). I would personally recommend Auditor, although I understand that that project has now merged with Whax to form BackTrack, a distro they claim is superior but that I have no experience with.
Security live CDs are bootable and don't require installation, they'll run quite happily in RAM. Most come with a range of popular open-source security tools, including packet sniffers.

your wireless router likely has status functionality built in
almost every router on the market has a web interface, you need to know the IP address of the router. most times you can get there via http://192.168.0.1 - though it varies some.
i'll assume you're a windows user for the moment... open up a command prompt (start->run type CMD, click OK)... type "ipconfig /all" - you'll see a bunch of information. look under your wireless interface, and you'll see a "default gateway" - that's your router, put that IP address into your web browser and it should pop up a login prompt
from there like i said you'll need the default password. your manual should have it, or just googling for "_your router model_ default password" should turn it up... off the top of my head belkins are totally blank, linksys is no username and password is "administrator", netgear is "admin" and password is "password"... they're silly, so first thing you wanna do when you get inside is change that.
from there, poke around, see if there is a status screen. should show you all the computers associated with your access point - will list them by MAC address, which is sort of like a serial number on each wireless card (not exactly, but it is a unique number) - you'll notice your own back on that "ipconfig" screen from the earlier step listed as the physical address
beyond that, another quick way is to simply issue the command "arp -a" at your command prompt - that command shows you all the machines that have recently made communication with your computer, so its not *exactly* the same thing, but because computers "broadcast" traffic to the local network, chances are everybody on your network has broadcast something or other, and that gives you a quick idea. (and to above, that also works at your smartey pants unix prompt, though i'd hope you already know that running solaris and having that little admin tag next to your name)
if you happen to be a Macintosh user (God knows I am), skip all the above, git yerself a copy of KisMac... or its equivalent on linux, Kismet. dunno if there's an equivalent tool on Windows... but something like AirSnort for Windows comes close. These tools are designed for gaining overviews of wireless networks (amongst other things) and will better suit the purpose than a packet sniffer, to an "untrainted" eye, you'll get a lot of hard to decipher nonsense with a sniffer, and not all of them necessarily work correctly on wireless interfaces. (though for that route, Ethereal can't be beat and is cross platform, Ettercap is another good one if you're more into the mischeif...)
and if you're looking to secure your router, opt for WPA if its available. WEP keys can be cracked in short time using a tool like the afformentioned kismac. you wouldn't be safe with WEP in my neighborhood MAC address filtering is also wise (to limit only specific MAC addresses communicate with your router), as it will keep some dumb kiddies away from fooling with your router, though its not terribly hard to beat by an attacker, as they can fake a MAC address they previously observed talking to your network.

Ettercap. Only runs on linux/unix boxes.
You can set up traffic forwarding, and use Ettercap to preform an ARP attack on the router. Thus, everyone on the network thinks YOUR computer is the router, and will send traffic to you first. Your computer then forwards all the network traffic over to the router and out to the internet.
Of course, this does much, much more than show you who is connected to the same network. It will show you anything and everything unencrypted bound for the internet - e-mail passwords and messages, Instant Messager conversations, etc, etc.
The other thing you could use, and is a bit more passive than attacking the router, is to use a port scanner like Nmap against the subnet your computer is on. This will show you a more limited range of who is on the network, depending on many factors.
