Erm, help, anyone?
    #633539 - 05/16/02 05:44 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

My problem is, I've never bothered straying from the tried, true, and trusted MMGG. So I have a few questions concerning humidification-perlite methods/heating methods and jar sizes.

  • Does the perlite have to be across the bottom of the chamber, or could it be in a container, supplied with water?
  • I am currently using a semi-submergable aquarium heater, and this is placed in a gallon glass jar filled with water, heating the entire chamber with it seems to be impossible, any suggestions for the heater I currently own?
  • I've never tried using anything over 1/2 pint jars, are pint size jars overkill?

Thanks for any replies, I'm trying to branch out into another realm of cultivation. Next up: casings!

It can be in a container, but this will take up space.

If you really need more heat then try 2 heaters. Or hook up a 100 watt light bulb in your chamber. That should warm things right up.

Pint size jarks work fine. They take just a little longer to colonize but they do produce more fruit.

It really is better to cover the whole bottom because then there is a greater surface area for water to evaporate into the air... it will take longer for a small container with perlite to humidify your terrarium up to the level you want than if you have the whole bottom covered. Also you would have to refill the water in the container more frequently.

Get a cool mist humidifier and a timer. A lot less hassle and less mess and cheaper in the long run. They cost 20-30 bucks.

Go to your local pet store and check out under-tank aquarium heaters. They're made for reptiles and stuff.

Man, if you're going to do cakes then I reccomend the 1/2 pints. The pints take too long to colonize.
If you've been doing cakes, then you really ought to try growing on rye. It's really no harder (in fact, I find it somewhat easier), it grows faster (because you can shake it up to distribute the mycelium), and your yields are better (since you generally start rye in quart jars). This then leads to spawn culture, where you can reliably colonize gallon+ jars using your quarts.

Good stuff, man! Yow!

Check out Quart Jars for Retards. If you do it just like that, and case with sterilized cactus soil, you should get some pretty results.
