Cutting down on junk
    #6334752 - 12/04/06 10:57 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

I don't think a day goes by that I don't think about life here on earth and how pointless it seems in the grand scheme of the universe. Not in a sad, depressing , "life is shit" kind of way, though. And I've realized some things about my own life.

One thing is I have a lot of crap I really don't need, or I use very sparingly. And with Xmas coming it means my family wants to give me more stuff. Stuff I'll probably use for a month and kick aside. I don't really have a lot of stuff as it is, but I still feel like I have too much. So I made a list of some of the stuff that I could get rid of and really not miss. Some were gifts from years ago that I got good use out of but now can't/won't/don't. Some were bad investments or impulse buys.

I guess all I really use these days is my laptop, my speakers for it, and our TV.

So far of all my junk I could sell this stuff, make some decent money to sock away for something down the line, and it wouldn't bother me:

LCD TV - Bought it at the beginning of the year to use as a monitor and TV. Now I have a laptop and this thing sits in the corner, unused.

Turntables/mixer - I use these at least 4 or 5 times a week but I haven't bought any new vinyl since when I purchased them. I love spinning but the hobby will eat up too much cash.

Telescope - Got this probably 6 or 7 years ago as a birthday gift from my parents. A really nice Orion 6" Dobsonian (reflector). It filled my head with awe and wonder some nights. Hands down the greatest gift I ever received. Never gets used any more.

CD's - Never buy CD's any more. I really don't download any music either.

PS2 - Got this one for free, but bought a bunch of games for it. Haven't used it in months. Probably won't for a few more if I don't sell it.

Subwoofer/amp/capacitor - It's no trunk rattling system. Only loud enough for my own car. And yeah, it's nice having that crisp bass sound to accent my nice speakers. But it's just not needed.

Desktop comp - Haven't used this since I got my laptop. Custom built it from parts I bought and parts an old friend gave me.

I just accumulate crap, even if I rarely use it. I just think in the back of my head "maybe I'll use it some day." Stupid me.

So in short, if you've read this far, I want to cut down on my possessions and trim down my lifestyle so I can get by with minimal cost, energy, and space. It may take a little while, but it's got to start somewhere. So if you're in the market for any of this crap keep your eyes peeled to the Marketplace. Some of it might end up there shortly.

I know what you mean. I plan on moving, and have been throwing a trash bag a week of crap away, to make the move easier.

Dude, throw that stuff up on Ebay and you'll be stoked to have the extra cash.

I sell stuff that I think I'll make $20 bucks on and turns out making double or triple.

It's just a 17" Samsung. It does 480i/p

AS: I'm probably going to Craigslist the telescope since it's 4 feet tall and weighs a good 60 pounds. The rest will probably go on ebay, here, or Craigslist.

You should take that Dobsonian out and take a look at the moon :-) Wear a sweater or three if you need.

The last few times I ate mushrooms, I became much more cognizant of all the clutter I had accumulated. My gf (now wife) was afraid that I was going to start throwing shit away everytime I tripped!

Nah. It's not fun looking at full moons with telescopes. It's better when it's partial so you can see a lot better detail along the terminator. I tried sketching it a few times but they turned out horrible.

Must have missed the "lol" part huh? Anyways, you're definately edgy about something. Edgy enough to make lifestyle changes in an attempt to obtain some form of relief. Good luck with that, try Valium if it don't work out.

Colonelpoop: I'm edgy because I recently discontinued heavy pot use. Anybody who has quit smoking bud after using very frequently knows the first week or two is fun-filled with insomnia, decreased appetite, and edginess. I'm not making changes in my life to compensate for being on edge. I'm doing it so I can have a better life with less bullshit.

Ferris: Prove you wrong on what? That your suggestion of throwing shit to the curb is stupid? I'm pretty sure I already proved you wrong on that one, but in case you need more here you go. If you actually read my first post you would see that my intention is to sell this junk, not wastefully throw it away. How would that help me or anybody else? I can't think of a worse way to begin trying to be less wasteful than to throw out perfectly good electronics and miscellaneous junk that someone else could use.

Too much money for a 15 minute high. Even the greenest, stickiest bud I can find will only get me going for 25-30 minutes max. Then I just feel tired and out of it until I smoke another bowl. At my worst I was burning through half ounces in a week. At my best it would be 2.

I love the stuff and enjoy relaxing after a long bullshit day at work with a nice joint. I've been smoking for 5 years, 4 of which have been daily use. The internal debate still rages on as to whether or not I should part ways with Mary Jane for good.

Meh, no worries. Sorry if I've come off as an asshole. I can only imagine people who've interacted with me recently have left thinking "what crawled up his ass?" Still, the withdrawal should be no excuse. I just hate this part of quitting. In a week or so I should feel on top of the world. Thats how it usually works.

Doesn't work for me. I've tried it before. I'll buy a gram and smoke for a day. Then realize how much I miss the high and buy an eighth. And the ugly reality rears its head and I'm back in the cycle again. I just wish it was as easy as quitting cigs for me.

I guess I'm different. I enjoy staying high all day and I don't think there's anything particularly "ugly" about it. Sure the cost is high, but so are a lot of medicines, and pot helps keep stress out of my life. Plus I love maintaining a connection to nature in such a way.

I smoke regularly. I moderate it very strictly, though. I won't smoke more than three times per day and I don't smoke everyday. I just smoke mostly to relieve stress and to slow my thoughts down for awhile. My mind races and it drives me crazy if I don't quiet it.

That's great that you like to have junk kicking around that you rarely use, or that sucks up too much money. I, however, would like to change that aspect of my life. If you payed attention to the first post in this thread you might have read that.
