Upside down cake
    #6330277 - 12/03/06 01:56 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

Has anyone ever had this before? Its B+ and cakes were dunked 24hr individually in the fridge. There is a window in the top of the tub for a fluro, and the sides are blacked out. My best guess is that the light reflected off the bottom of the tub. I suppose should have put a lid beneath them, but by the time I got extra lids the mycellium had kinda grown around the wire mesh and I didnt want to damage the cakes. I am planning on putting some dull black plastic sheet on the bottom to stop the reflection, but for now I just elevated the whole wire mesh. Other than the inconvince I can't really see a huge problem. By the way this is my first grow (excluding emergency disposal of 12 incubating jars at my old appt).
My questions:

-Should I let the flush continue or pick them now?

-Providing I elimiate the reflection and provide proper lighting from the top, will the next flush grow from the top of the cake?

Any suggestions or insight is greatly apperciated. thanks guys

Yeah you can let it keep fruiting. I don't know if that you change the light it will make them fruit out of the top, but you just have to wait and see. Just re-dunk after the flush.

But that is really freaking cool though.

Heh yeah thats pretty sweet.May wanna case the outsides of those cake though. I've read that the pins for subsequent flushes begin formation while the previous flush is maturing. If this is the case yo may be getting th other flushes from the same area. This is pure speculation though as i don't have much experience as of yet.

On a side note has anyone ever cased a "ball" of substrate and fruited it from all sides?

Yeah I didnt have any verm when after dunking. I will be rolling them after the next dunk. I have noticed that all the fruits I've gotten from any of the cakes all grow from the layer of verm on the bottom. Rolling, I think is more important than I intially thought. I'm getting a bit of white fuzzy up the stems of my fruits, about 1/4-1/2". Is this a normal amount? humid is 95-97% with no condensation on the cakes, temp is kept between 75-78.

My guess for the reason behind this happening is that the vermiculite barrier acted as a casing providing optimal conditions for pins to form. You could try dunking and rolling in vermiculite to help promote pin growth elsewhere on the cake for subsequent flushes.
