Sterelizing Honey Water
    #632446 - 05/16/02 01:56 AM (21 years, 10 months ago)

I wanna put some sterilized honey water into a syringe, what would be the best way to do this, i dont have an autoclave, or a pressure coooker. Could i just make my honey water mixture and boil it in a pot for 30 min. then suck up the honey water?
Any suggestions...
I already went through the FAQ, didn't find anything about making it in a syringe.

Also, what would be the best ratio of honey to water?

cause when i make my syringes today, im gonna add a little extra water to my shot glass, so when im done making a syringe, i can suck the remaining spores up into a 60cc and a 30cc syringe and have it cultivate inside the syringe so when i wanna innoculate, i just stick it in a jar and go. It just skips the extra step, and i think it will be more convienient.

Any advise ChromeCrow? i know your pro. Any comments would be much appreciated.

what is the point for honey in the water, generally speaking? i have not read up on this. is it just a goon nutrient sourse for spores to germinate better on? can someone inform me?

Just don't want some andromeda strain arising from this effort and killing human existance.
j/k
I wonder if any one has tried this before? (germinating in the syringe)

The point of the honey water is to germinate the spores inside of the syringe and mycelium colonizes the honey water, much like agar, then when its time to innoculate your jars, you use mycelium honey water in place of spores.

The difference is, the spores have already germinated and colonization has started, so it cuts as much as 5 days off your colonization time, you also can stuff a PF jar with a shitload of it, and it will colonize so freakin fast. All in all, its just a way of being more efficient, 1cc of spore water turns into 60cc's of mycelium, you can now inoculate 60 jars instead of one. make sense?

well ShroomHermit, its the same as doing it in a jar, you just skip the extra step of drawing out the mycelium from the jar and go straight to inoculating. The way i see it, it could possibly be less contams, thats why im trying this cause alought of people get contams when trying to colonize the honeywater. If it works out realy well maybee ill write up a tech or somthing.

Doesn't honey water grown mycelia (?) have a very limited shelf life? Compaired to spores?

ok, i was hoping you wasnt planning on injecting a cake, lol contams you know. i think this will work, i dont see any reason it would be different from using a jar doing the honeytek, but with the honeytek, there is a high rate of contamination, so watch closely. another problem i see is if you dont use the syringe fast enough, the myc growing to large, and not being able to get it out of the syringe, in the honey tek, you put shards of broken glass, to swish around and break up the myc. you will have nothing to do this in a syringe, and if you try adding the glass into the syringe, your sure to get blockage.
you can try this as an experiement and post your results, but personally i would just follow the honey tek

Ya sorta, ive been told that after 75% colonization you have a few weeks before it goes bad.... i realy dont understand why it goes bad, maybee this is just another myth? Im sure after all the nutrient content of the honey is gone the mycelium will stop growing and eventualy die off, id like to see this first hand. Also i dont plan on keeping it around for very long, just a week or two in my incubator and then its play time

Im still not sure about how im going to sterilize my honey water... i was think about loading it into the syringe and microwaveing it for a few minutes, do you think the syringe would melt? any comments are much appreciated.

Wouldn't the heating of the syringe to such a temperature cuase the plunger of the syringe to pop off, or the honey water to spill out?
Some microwaves have trouble dealing metals (the needle) so you should also watch out for that...

Thanks Chrome, ill keep ya posted.... im gonna give it a go tonight.
The reason for using the syringe was to see if contamination was a result of the jar. The honey tech is natourious for contams. so i thought i might improvise. I was think about adding glass shards to my syringe, but then i tried a few experiments, turn out that the syringe is so damn big that blockege is easily pushed threw with minimal effort. Another problem i might run into is co2 content and o2 content, the mycel. wont be able to breath (hardly) so growth will be slow, or none at all.
