Computer Noise

My computer makes random horrible horrible noise. I opened it up and blasted it with dustoff, didn't seem to help much. Sometimes its quiet then it goes BRRRRRRRRRRRHWWHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-buzz-buzzz-buzz WHAAAAAAAAAA. What's the cause of it's condition?

How old is your hard disk? That sounds like a hard disk bearing starting to go. Make a backup if you care about your data!

New drives use fluid bearings that practically never wear out and don't have that noise problem, BTW.

I bought it in maybe 2003/04, think it needs a whole new hard disk or can I replace the bearing?

Mine did that too...sounds like a lawnmower   Open your case and blast the fans, and try to get as much dust as you can.  Make sure the wires aren't in the way of the fan too.  Out of curiosity, do you have a Vaio?

You can't replace the bearing, you need a new drive, if that's the problem. They're pretty cheap now, though. Here's a 300gb drive for $90.

You can confirm the problem is with the drive by turning off the computer, disconnecting the power cable from the drive, then powering up the computer and seeing if the noise is gone. If you find it's not the drive, then as others have suggested, it's probably one of the fans.

BTW, I had a drive with a bad bearing run for two years making a racket before it finally died, so total failure of your drive isn't necessarily imminent. I'd make sure any important data was backed up though, just in case.

Good luck!

Definitely do what you can to make sure you're certain of what component is making the noise. Sounds like it could be a HD, but fans can sound that way too.

I had a bad fan that actually sounded just like a bad hard drive, thought I needed to replace the HD... and (completely by accident) I discovered that it was merely a fan. I would have been pissed at myself if I had bought a new HD without needing one (although as long as you have enough hardpoints in your case and enough cables... I suppose you can never have too many hard drives )

Hmm yea I'll crack open the case and take another look at the fan. Thanks for the link, I think I'll pick one of those up actually. Any idea if the mail in rebate is open to Canadians?

No idea. Ask the store.

FYI, they take forever to send you the check (like 6 months), and they try to fool you into trading it for some lame-ass software by sending you emails with links to a page where if you click the wrong thing, you instantly switched your rebate for the software and can't change it back. So watch out for that! :whoa:
