has anyone used cooking bags instead of pf jars. i was reading a tek that explained how to steralize vermiculite/brf in them because you can use much more substrate. also, can you steralize any other kind of growing medium in them?

the reynolds hot bags DO NOT PRESSURE COOK THESE you will ruin your brown rice flour mix i already tried it it will become a big clump of slimy subtrate . i dunno about any other kind of subtrate. if u oven bake the hot bag for a hour on each side i seen that tek befor but it dont work on pressure cookers for sum reason. the oven bake tek dosent always get all the contams out tho

if you bake it at 350 for an hour it will be sterile.
i just don't know how much water will escape
because they pop.. it says to put it into another bag and bake in it.. but.. i don't know..

if done right, i think just about anything can be done in one. you got to have your moisture right, i think that is probably the biggest reason for failure. sounds like the slimy ball of brf may have been too wet, or not enough verm to make it airy. i have a combination in mine as we speak, for growing phoenix oysters, and it is working great.i tried once before with birdseed, and i lost 1 bag from bursting in the pc, the other the damn ants got into....... if you follow this link, watch your moisture, you should be ok una's DIY oven bag tek

BRF can be used- Look under the section grow cubensis. Theres a bulk tek by Hippie in which he uses brf in oven bags.
