White Stringy Myc.
    #6321849 - 11/30/06 03:34 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

I inoculated 6 pint jars a little more than a week ago and the mycelium looks good in some spots (a really thick white circular shape) but most of them have some spots that look really "stringy".  I dont have any pics right now but i'm working on it.  I just want to make sure i didnt mess these ones up.  Is that stringy stuff normal or is it some kind of contaminant?  Ill hopefully be able to post pictures tomorrow.  The other concern i had is that i left my TiT unattended for a week and the temp got close to 90 and now the jars seem like they're growing really slowly if at all.  Could too high of a temp stop the mycelium in its tracks?  Thanks in advance for any help/tips

You'll just have to watch the mycelium for changes in color. Mushroom mycelium can have several types from cottony to rhizomorphic.

The speed of colonization falls off very rapidly at 86F and above, and that figure is for mycelium temperature, not air temperature. Mycelium temperature is always a few degrees higher due to thermogenesis. I prefer 70F to 80F for an ambient air temperature.

The biggest cause besides contaminants for stalled jars however, is running out of oxygen. Make sure the holes are open so gasses can exchange.
