Lawmaker Responds to Investigative Report on Dangerous Herb

Lawmaker Responds to Investigative Report on Dangerous Herb

An immediate response to last night's Eyewitness News Investigation into the herb called Salvia. Just hours after we warned you about the legal but dangerous substance, a Utah lawmaker took some action.

Utah Lawmaker Paul Ray watched our story on Salvia divinorum. He didn't like what he saw.

"I am rocking the world right now. I just feel like I am rocking the world."

Only KSL brought you the video of kids tripping out on the legal herb, Salvia -- a substance narcotics officers compare to LSD.

"Like I've stepped outside my body."

We went undercover to show you how easy it is to buy the hallucinogen at Salt Lake Valley smoke shops. Our story revealed that while Utah teens know all about smoking Salvia to get high, parents are in the dark.

"Never knew anything about this. Never heard of this."

Rep. Paul Ray, (R) Clearfield: "It was upsetting to see we have a drug of that strength that's legal."

Moments after our story ended, Utah Representative Paul Ray began writing a bill to ban Salvia. We were there on Capitol Hill to see the paperwork filed.

Rep. Paul Ray, (R) Clearfield: "We're basically going to make it illegal to possess or sell. Period."

Late today we learned one local police department is also reacting to our story. They've decided now is the right time to educate officers about the herb, emailing out information and photos of Salvia.

Fuck it, there is no hope. Stupidity wins in the end always.

From the article -
Rep. Paul Ray, (R) Clearfield: "It was upsetting to see we have a drug of that strength that's legal."

Are you talking about alcohol? Because it seems to me that alcohol does a lot more damage than salvia ever could. Are you ever going to hear about a family of four getting wiped out by a driver tripping on salvia? How about a dehabilitating salvia addiction? Salvia poisoning? Good work you dopey fuck.

My point was the hypocrisy inherent in the system (monty python line?). I clearly have no desire to see alcohol made illegal.

Alcohol, gets you shit plastered for hours if you drink enough. Can cause you to fall over, crash your car, have unprotected sex, beat your family etc...

Salvia, makes you giggle like mad for 5 minutes and see some wacky shit.

Obviously Salvia is much much worse guys, gee.

why are people so stupid? not only does prohibition not work, but alcohol and much more dangerous things like datura are legal. Demonizing things works all too well for them. I dont understand what they get out of it. A feeling of good? That has to be it because i cant think of any reason that alcohol is so intertwined with out society and drugs that can be profound and spiritual are a criminal act.

Does this mean it will be illegal in utah or in the whole united states. Damn if it's the whole usa that's gonna suck. I haven't even got to try it yet.

The article stated "Utah lawmaker", so hopefully it's just a state congressman, not a house representative. The sad part of this whole story is that Salvia will likely become illegal because of its hallucinogenic properties. Is it bullshit? Absolutely, but so is keeping marijuana illegal and they still do it.

I'm going to get a plant before it gets scheduled. They're very easy to take cuttings from so i could have a permanent supply that way. It's too expensive anyway. One of the smoke shops here charges 40.99 for a gram. But yeah every time we find something fun that we cant get arrested for they decide to go and schedule it. Err.. pisses me off.

What do narcotics offers know about either LSD or Sally D? Nothing, that's what. They can't very well compare them then.

Regardless of the whole Which-is-worse discussion; salvia is dangerous, especially to those new to it or haven't done any research.

You may have read a TR on erowid about a guy who gets some kicked down to him, gets drunk at a bar, calls a cab, smokes some with the fucking cab driver en route, and crashes into a somethingerother. I was at a social gathering one evening, not too long ago and saw a kid take a few rips and lay back on the sofa. Well, then he starts leaning forward real slow, like someone going into a k-hole, when suddenly he FALLS forward and cracks his head wide open on the coffee table. Blood everywhere.

I'm not trying to be Jonny BringDown, just saying that salvia is no joke and it could be dangerous. I've smoked my share of it, but personally, I could give a fuck less if it was made illegal.

OneMoreRobot: Idea? It's a fuckin' reality. You know Salvia? Nigga stole my TV.

A letter to Congressman Paul ray and the news team who investigated shit nothing because they are dumb jounalistic whores.

"Utah Lawmaker, Paul Ray

and

both Debbie Dujanovic - reporter
Kelly Just - producer.

Salvia divinorum is an entheogenic plant that belongs to the Mint family. (peppermint, etc).

Again I see here in this alleged investigative news report to what I refer to as "Sensationalistic journalism over responsible reporting of facts."

Meaning that the news investigative team has no knowledge of what it was they were reporting on.
To call their selves an investigative team and have no knowledge of the history and use of such plants shows a lack of intelligence on the part of those news investigative reportage team. That is their ability to spread distorted news to the public. News which you read and ran to brownnose your morals on others who think differently than you do. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Salvia has been used ceremoniously by Mazatec Indians for more than 3,000 years. Two other plants belonging to the genera Coleus, and also sold by the millions throughout the world and available in most garden supply shops in America also have the same ingredients as Salvia divinorum.

Do you intend to also make Coleus plants illegal in Utah?

A brief note on those other related plants.

"When the mushrooms, (psilocybine containing), are not in season (in Oaxaca, Mexico), Mazatec shamans and curanderas (including María Sabina, A world renown sabia) employ several other common psychotropic plants for divination.
One such plant is Salvia divinorum, a member of the mint family which is rich in essential oils. Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann (1980, discoverer of LSD) reported that it was a plant used ceremoniously by María Sabina. Mazatec shamans and "sabia"s refer to this plant as "Hojas de la Pastora" (leaves of the shepherdess). Doña María Sabina referred to it as "la hembra" (the female) (Wasson, 1962). Rolling twelve to sixteen mature leaves into a plug and holding it between the cheek and gum for fifteen minutes can experience salvia’s divinitory powers. Profound visual effects will be noticed with eyes closed or in total darkness. Dried Salvia leaves can also be smoked for milder effects.

When the Salvia herb is not available for use in divination, the Mazatecs employ two different species of Coleus found in Oaxaca and throughout most of north America and other regions of the world.

Coleus pumilus is referred to as "el macho" (the male). Two other varieties are in another species known as Coleus blumi and are referred to as (1) "El nene" (the children) and (2) "el ahijado" (the godson). The high is similar to magic mushrooms, not LSD as reported falsely by the police to the investigative news team and smoking effects only last from 15 minutes to two hours."

This was excerpted from John W. Allen's "Mushroom Pioneers."

Coleus plants are sold in every garden and plant shop throughout continental United States and Hawaii.

There is a website of my works by Shroomster Enterprises at"

http://www.mushroomjohn.com (13,500 photographs).

What I would like would be to see you try to make illegal, the seed of the poppy plant which grows poppies which produce heroin.

Poppy seeds are sold in every Bar and Restaurant supply firm in every major city of the United States and on the internet and are also sold legally in every country in the world. They are not illegal and are a multi-billion dollar a year business.

They are labeled as "Dutch Blue (Papaver Somniferam is their Latin scientific name) and they are sold for bakery goods such as Kaiser rolls and other buns and are untreated and can produce high grade opium and as noted above, they are not illegal anywhere in the world.

However, Marijuana seeds are illegal everywhere in the world, except in the Nederlands.

Heroin is described by narcotics and law enforcement officers and agencies, as well as the DEA and Interpol, as the most dangerous drug, yet these poppy seeds which can produce opium and heroin are not illegal for anyone to purchase. And I have seen such plants growing in hundreds of yards around the United States. Often by 60-80-year-old-ladies, but also by addicts who grow them for the opium the poppy pods produce.

Why do you not fight to make those poppy seeds illegal? They are the main source of reasons of illegality of narcotics and you are more concern about a common plant sold all over America.

There are more than 1,000 natural plants available with free legal highs which have no laws against them (see "Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants" by Christian Raastch and Roger Liggenstorfer), Descriptions of more than 1,000 plants described with psychoactive and narcotic properties from all over the world, hundreds which exist int he United states. This book provides descriptions and photos of them and what they do to you if taken).

As for Salvia, it is not a dangerous drug as told to you by police who often lie and exaggerate and lie about drug-plants so they can justify their jobs.

I thought that in our constitution it was illegal for a lawmaker to write a law because he does not like something someone else does. Terry Schivo is a good example of a law passed for one person.

Start really researching these drugs you want to create laws for instead of spreading and further perpetrating false information and illicit laws to the public.

This only creates more individuals who will come to distrust their elective officials and created division amongst the citizens of this country.

I personally do not like what you stand for but I do not try to hurt you by enacting laws which would harm people you do not even known or care about.

Best regards,

John W. Allen

One more point. If you attempt to make Salvia illegal, then you must also make illegal Coleus plants and Poppy seeds. If you do not, it shows your bias towards individuals who are minding their own business. Your morals are not the same as everyone else’s in this country and you insult the integrity of the citizens of this country by making one thing illegal because you heard of it on the news and not making the real dangerous drugs illegal. That is hypocrisy."
