Have you sent any spore's to Workman at Sporeworks? He is actively in the business, and has a microscope. Im sure he could make some good arguments on what these truely are.

I've recenlty sent samples to Workman of two bay area varieties. One is the classic Friscosa, the other is smaller and looks more like Fibrillosa. He's got a bunch of other material to get to first, so it might take some time.

I wonder if the cyclone effect is consistent with the Bay Area Psilocybe shown in Paul Stamets book, or if it is it appears sporadically... I suspect it is incidental, but I am not sure.

I've put various fibs/friscosas on agar, none of them demonstrated the spiraling effect. These were done multispore, I suspect paul found a substrain thru isolation which he called the cyclone psilocybe.

Ok so at the fair they're saying this is the cyclone...

I took some specimens from my Friscosa patch to the fair. Everyone I talked to ID'd them as Fibs, except this fellow 'James' who called them cyclones. It was nice to meet Peter Werner, he had some cyans with him and we talked for awhile. Auweia, peter told me the species you found might be P. subaeruginascens, not subaeruginosa. They're often confused.

I found a similar mushroom in Berkeley last year, I thought it was P. azurescens but Workman recently examined it but says it's not. This is the original specimen.

And some cultivated...

That is a nice ass!

I guess subaeruginascens is japanese?

That's a good photo you found. These don't get wavy either. Subaeruginascens are known to fruit from April to July in temperate southern Japan and subtropical Indonesia. They really are strong. :crazy2:

Pics of the cystidia and basidia up in this thread would help lots.

Bluemeanie, within a few days I'll post a composite image of an unknown bay area psilocybe. (the one in my avatar)

In the meantime, here's one to check out. Composite by Workman.

Cheliocystidia occasionally forked, but not as described for Psilocybe cyanofibrillosa. This specimen came from WA, PNW USA. It was originally described as a cyanofib.

The the photo Tahoe posted above is Psilocybe subaeruginosa, as is the one below.

Ok, so here's a composite image of this species presented by Workman of Sporeworks. I sent him some samples a while back and have been anxiously awaiting his reply. This is very interesting... he also thinks this species could be Psilocybe subaeruginascens. So now that's two ID's for subaeruginascens in the Bay area, coming from two very respected mycologists, Peter Werner and Workman.

Sample:
Location: Berkeley, CA
Collection Date: 12/06
Microscopy: Dried sample rehydrated and mounted with 2.5% KOH.
Collector: Waylitjim
Comments: Annulated Psilocybe similar to P. subaeruginascens

Were those from the same location as Auweia's find?

It is possible, though, unlikely.

More probable is that Ps. subaeruginascens is the closest known species to match the unknown Bay Area Psilocybes microscopically.

I originally thought I found annulated azurescens, but since they're not azures, they very well may be a new species. Although it's always possible subaeruginascens spores traveled to CA, we have many visitors from overseas.

Here's a nice new composite. I took the photo and Workman did the microscopy.
