psilocybe caerulescens cultivation

Now that prints of this famous species have become available to the community (hawkseye), I think a reasonably concerted effort should be made to develop working teks to fruit this species. If not strictly for its reputed extreme potency, then at least for its historical significance (i.e. first shroom ingested by Wasson at Maria Sabina veleda, shroom depicted on ancient aztec sculpture of xochipilli, etc.) I have done some searches here, apparently someone sent out some prints of these as well as some zapotecorum prints years ago, The only further reports I could find involved successful germination on agar, no other info. There is a cool thread of someone fruiting zapotecorum on pastuerized straw, long incubation & low yield but still cool. Not sure if this would work for caerulescens, both are native to the same areas, but zapos grow in wet swampy areas while caerules grow on exposed soil from recent landslides at higher elevations. There are apparently several papers & a book called les champignons hallucinogenes du mexico published by Heim & wasson in the 50's which probably contain relevant info, unfortunately these were written in french, not aware of any translations. Just curious if anyone has any ideas as to cool substrates to try or any other info, thanks for reading, peace

P. caerulescens looks like a wood lover, it will probably grow outdoors on wood chips.

Good idea, may try that next summer. Azures dont work here,
big daily temp swings in fall/winter. Being a tropical shroom
caerulescens may work here in summer months, an interesting
alternative. In the meantime, a sterile wood based substrate may be
the best way to begin. The trolls in the woods have plenty of oak
sawdust, would it be best to somehow compost the sawdust, or maybe
mix in some worm castings or something, then sterilize in bags &
innoc w/ grain spawn? Anyone know of a way to compost small amounts
of sawdust? Maybe just soak it in water for a while to break it down?
any ideas appreciated, thanks

try using a 5-7gallon bucket, fifty percent hardwood chips and saw dust, twenty five percent wheat straw and twenty five percent manure. this process takes a little bit of time, use a organic activator and buffer with calcium carbonate if needed. wet evenly and store in warm area.

If you have access to a place where the stable horses, most of the stables use small chips as bedding for horses. Most places will give you this for free, if you are polite. Sometimes in the spring and early summer when it is in demand for landscapers and gardeners it is harder to come by.
Anyway you want some bedding that has sat outside a while, a couple of weeks in the summer, a little longer in the winter. It should have been rained on, heated up, due to composting and cooled down. This is ideal for wood lovers.
The chips will still be recognizeable as such, but it will be darker than when it was first dumped outside.

Thanks, good idea. Had oak chips for the azure project, but ran out.
Had to get them from a local tree service, a pain the ass. There are
some stables around here, just tell them its for landscaping, cool.

asci, thanks for the great pm, shroomery kicks ass. Tried to reply,
probably screwed something up, new here. Anyway, so the above
mentioned compost should be colonized, placed into clay pots, then
cased with a clay/sand mix (unpastuerized, correct?) and kept at
above average humidity & temp levels. I read a similar zapotecorum
tek somewhere where the pots are then placed into tubs of water.
If this is the way to go, then should the bottom hole be sealed &
water absorbed through the porous clay pots, or should the holes
stay open to allow fully soaked conditions for the culture?
Also, anyone know how difficult it is to obtain a fruiting strain
of this species, i.e should many more isolates be made than when
working with cubes/pans to ensure having a fruitable strain?
Thanks for your help, Livingstoned
