I lined up outside NintendoWorld in Rockefeller Center at 5:15 A.M., I was 58th in line, they had about 100 - 150 that they were selling.
I'm gonna go plug it in now, I'm posting this from the shitter.

All this talk of the Wii is making me want to play one... but I'm too damn poor and I don't think anyone in my dorm has one yet.

golf is my favorite one on there. I just wish there were more levels however, definitely hit some zelda though. The beginning is sort of lame, nothing compares to the beginning of the SNES zelda however, but once you get a bit farther it really tears into some wild shit

get a little happy with the submit key?
On another note; the Wii sports games are pretty sweet. The controller actually responds pretty well. I'd definitely be happy with the investment if I had one. I'll probably get one when they are actually in stock.

Its the least you could do.
Totally forgot I had work last night so that really cut into my playing time but I wound up getting a good amount in, didn't go to bed until 2 last night which I thought was pretty fucking early considering I have fucking Zelda in my possession. A joint of afghani to the dome along with a couple of glasses of red wine defeated my gaming though.
But now I'm ready to share with you my Wii impressions. Starting up the Wii and setting it up is a joy. It's an immediate introduction to the control mechanism and let me tell you that the reaction of the system to the movement of your controllers is INSTANTANEOUS. There is no delay, zip, zero. And, it moves totally fluidly. As far as navigating Wii's menus went, and creating an avatar for myself, the control scheme was intuitive and easy and felt completely natural within seconds. Every individual game has its own learning curve for the controllers though - but we'll get to that soon enough.
It took my Wii a couple of seconds to find the same wireless network that I use to surf the internet, my upstairs neighbor's. Right at my disposal were a few NES, SNES, and Turbo Grafix 16 and Sega Genesis games. I didn't buy any yet but I will definitely be buying Bonk because I miss that caveman! I never had Turbo Grafix. The prices are a little high considering ROMs are free but when you take into account licensing and rights renewal...it's understandable. I was kind of expecting an iTunes type $1 per game though.
After I had my little white buddy (and it's a VERY aesthetically pleasing and sleek little console) all set up, I popped in the game that comes packaged with the Wii, Wii Sports. Wii Sports is a good introduction to the mechanics of the remote (wii-mote) and the nunchaku attachment, which is not needed for every game. What made me hesitant about the Wii at all was the feeling of the controller, before I bought it I mean. Iwas afraid it couldn't possibly be as smooth as it is in the commercials.
Well, it is. When playing Wii baseball, as you stand there at the plate, everything you do with your wiimote is replicated with the bat in the batter's hands, instantly. I was even able to do a Gary Sheffield impression by wagging my bat. At first I had a lot of trouble hitting home runs, but let me tell you how intuitive this control system is...I decided to start thinking like a baseball player. I got pitched inside, and when I swung for the ball, I tucked my wrist in and consciously tried to pull the ball to left field - and it worked. On the next pitch I tried to lace it to the opposite field - and it worked.
I couldn't hit a home run, so I thought, hmm...maybe I need to uppercut my swing a bit. Bam, first swing that I did that with, I cranked a homer to the left field seats. Next came Bowling, it's pretty straight forward and a lot of fun. Every bit of tilt on your remote affects the way you throw the ball and what kind of spin it gets. I haven't played Golf or Tennis yet but Boxing is where it's at. My roommate and I boxed last night and it is fucking wild. With the remote in one hand the nunchaku in the other, they represent each of your boxing gloves. TO block your body you hold them to your chest, to block your face you hold them up in front of your face. The game responds to jab motions by jabbing, hook motions by throwing hooks, and you can even uppercut. By moving both remoted left and right youcan dodge punches and circle your opponent.
You forget how dorky you probably look - because you're having so much goddamn fun.
Next: The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess

It was difficult to play Wii Sports for too long with Zelda sitting on my coffeetable and it wasn't long before I ripped the packaging open and drooled over the white and gold game disc. I slid it into the Wii (whose self-loading disc slot, by the way, swallows games with an utterly satisfying crunchy clicky noise) and it popped up on the main Wii Menu, which is broken up into different channels. I chose Zelda from the menu and was treated to a nice little intro animation before the game was even loaded.
When it did load, it opened to a similar scene from Ocarina of Time, a title behind which Link rode Epona across the land of Hyrule. Holy shit, I thought. This is going to be good. After all - Ocarina of Time is one of the best games ever created.
The game starts simply and boringly enough. You're Link, and you're an older, bigger Link than in recent installments. I'd say Link looks about sixteen, he looks like he even has some muscle to him. He's a ranch-hand in Ordon village, where the story begins, and where youdo lots of little tasks leading up to acquiring the slingshot and wooden sword you need to start your adventure out in the wider world of Hyrule.
Zelda is gorgeous, and it's not even an honest presentation of the full capabilities of the Wii's graphics, since it was designed with GameCube in mind. Still, water effects are dazzling, textures are rich, and the overall quality of the graphics is definitely no lower than a B+, moreso an A-. Link moves smoothly as you move the joystick that is part of the nunchaku attachment. You swing Link's sword by swinging the wii-mote, and point the wiimote and shoot using the trigger on the back to use his slingshot. He's fast, faster than he was in Ocarina of Time when I used to groan at having to run long distances.
And of course in this Zelda installment, you never have to "earn" Epona...she's there from the getgo, and fuck is she ever fun to ride. I'm about 2 or 3 hrs into the game and the story has only just started. At my last save, I had just turned into wolf-form as I entered the twilight realm, so I don't have much more to report on this other than that it is awesome and sweeps me up.
But my most important Wii Review is about Madden 07

I really enjoy the Madden series of videogames. It helps that I'm a football fan, though I know some people that hate football but love playing Madden. There's a reason for that - when you play MAdden on Playstation or X-Box, you can just pick any random play and mash the buttons and think you're doing something. The PS and X-Box versions of Madden always make me feel like even if I wasn't pressing any buttons, all the things happening would still happen. Sometimes I feel like I'm watching a game and just pressing buttons along with it.
Not with the Wii. The Wii demands movement. Anything at all that you can think of in Madden 07, any move, requires movement. As such, you don't memorize button patterns, you memorize movements, all of which are designed in a way that makes complete sense for the actions they perform. Madden uses the nunchaku attachment as well...as you run the ball, you juke left and right by jerking the nunchaku left or right, while stiff-arming defenders by turning the wii-mote left or right. You control the direction of your running using the joystick on the nunchaku.
Want to have the ball snapped to you and drop back for a pass? To snap the ball you have to gesture towards yourself and then to pass the ball you have to make a passing motion. You can choose how exaggerated you want any motion to be...it can be a little flick of the wrist, or you can pretend you're Carson Palmer launching a bomb downfield to Chad Johnson. On defense you use the remote and nunchuk to spin away from defenders by flicking both left or right, and you push them both forward to deliver big crushing hits on your opponents.
There are so many small ways in which the Wii version of Madden is different, that it really feels like a completely different game. And having played MAdden 07 in all of its incarnations I am ready to proclaim that the Wii version is far and away the superior version. It can't beat the X-Box's graphics, no, but as far as gameplay (and that's all I am interested in - good gameplay) the Wii version of Madden is highly addictive and highly superior to all its competitors.
What small ways did they tweak it? You have to wave your remote to call for a fair catch just like an actual kick returner would. When you are on defense, and the computer is on offense, it fakes snapping the ball by yelling "hike!" just like in all versions of Madden. BUT, the Wii remote has a speaker in it, and the "hike!" comes out of the speaker. I can't tell you how many times that has drawn me offsides already. Little things like this really have me enamored of the game.
All in all I feel like the Wii has a whole world of possibility laid out before it. What will save or damn it is 3rd party support. Nintendo has a lot of games planned to come out for it over the next 12 months from Super Smash Bros. Brawl to Mario Galaxy to Metroid Prime 3 (which sounds tremendous) and they also have good 3rd party support now but hopefully as other developers see what the Wii is capable of they will want to develop games for it.
I feel like my money was well spent, and that I'm going to get a lot of enjoyment out of my Wii. It was absolutely worth waking up at the asscrack of dawn to wait on a line to get.

Nice write up. One of the few good and understandable review/experience reports that I've actually been able to read through and comprehend well. Makes it sound really good.

You could play Zelda or Madden or Wii sports without ever standing up. You can do all of this stuff sitting down, with minor hand movements.
But seriously, it's more fun the more you get into it...my roommate and I had a boxing match, and we started sitting on the couches we usually sit on. We were standing up moving all around before it was over.

The war isen't on drugs... the war is on the causes that influence people to abuse drugs. drug-abuse is a by-product of the system and much like radioactive waste occurs from utilizing nuclear power, drug addicts with drug-problems will need to be properly disposed of, like the decaying radioactive waste produced from nuclear energy. -i2ancid

I got the Wii about a week ago so I know exactly how you feel. I'm 31+ hours into Zelda and down one set of batteries but I think I'm nearing the end so I'll have to look for a new game soon.
And to all of you talking about moving around and swinging your arms. With the exception to blowing, boxing, and golf I usually just flick my wrist.

If you are a football fan, CosmicFool, I'd really pick up Madden if I were you.
Pickins are slim right now for games on the Wii, they'll be rolling out more in January and then March though. Right now I'd like to play Excite Truck, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and to a faaaaar lesser extent Red Steel.
There's a game coming out this Tuesday called Far Cry: Vengeance that looks good.

pfft, no problem with that. the immediate post-purchase addiction will be strong but my girlfriend's plane from Argentina arrives in 7 days and 10 minutes from now so I'll be back out and about soon enough.

$250 for the base system, which comes with one remote and nunchaku and a copy of Wii Sports. Additional games are the usual $50 bones, an additional remote is $35, additional nunchaku is $20, which is a fucking rip if you ask me, but oh well.

Monkey Ball is my second favorite game on the system right now. At first using the remote seems very horrible, as many reviewers seem to harp on. But eventually I found that it allowed for better control, also the levels are fucking awesome. It also comes with 50 multiplayer mini-games which are pretty amusing really

be sure to play wii sports while you've got sweaty hands... and swing way too hard. Also, don't wear that tacky armband.
Then send us pictures of your broken TV screen
