Drinking Straws

I was wondering if anyone else has tried putting straws into there birthed cakes. It is outlined in pf-tek 5th edition. Basically you put water into the straw once a day etc to rehydrate the cake. I am currently trying it. Any opinions?

I never used straws, but I did drill holes in my cakes for rehydration. I would drill a 1/4" hole with an exacto knife and fill the hole with water. The cake would then drink from this resevoir. I found mycelium growth to be extensive from the hole and patches of mushrooms would have a base growing on the top of the hole. All in all it worked well. Either way you go watch for uncolonized cake on the inside. Opening this up to the world could cause some contams to grow within your cake.
