 State of Michigan to Take Controll of Major City

I just cant get over this. I was raised in Flint Michigan and the many suburbs of Flint. Flint was made rather famous by the home town producer - M. Moore's movie "Roger&Me" (I understand that he is really from a Flint suburb- Davison)-
I knew many years ago that the economy in Flint was terrible. I witnessed hundreds of thousands of GM jobs leave while I was there. I remember during the booming economy of the eighties that in Flint many were lined up around the side of a major grocery store for jobs that were to replace previous higher paid union jobs. While the rest of the country was in an economic boom, Flint was quickly becoming a geto town.
Here is my concerns: I recently got word that Flint has recently gotten much worse. The voters have recently recalled the mayor.... the city is now over $42,000,000 in debt (or so I have read) and very deep cutts in the police and fire departments have been made. And now for the really bad news.....
The media is reporting that the State of Michigan, under Governor Engler is seriously considering taking controll of the city!!
Man, has anyone else ever heard of a city being taking over by the state due to extremely poor economical conditions? I'm simply in disbelief... I keep thinking that my home town would pull out of it somehow... ' looks like I was wrong. (*sigh*)
Thankfully I left that getto town years ago. I understand that people with degrees cant even buy a job within Flint.

In 1975, New York City was so deep in debt that they asked Washington for a federal bail out. President Ford told NY to fuck off, in no uncertain terms. That is not an exact quote by our ex prez, but I think you get the point. NY eventually worked out it's problems, and is now a shining beacon of light again. Cities need to work out their own problems, and not sit around and wait for bigger government bail outs.

I recall NYC almost going bankrupt once, and I remember all of the talk of a Federal bailout. What differs with these two situations is that the Feds werent talking about taking controll over NYC- they were just discussing the need to maybe loan them a ton of money. In Flint's situation, it apears as if the State of Mi. thinks that it can manage the city better.

There's only one thing that can save Flint, MI....a nuke. That city is a prime example of what a city should not be, it's worse than Detroit...in addition the state is thinking of letting Detroit annex hamtramack (either that or lincoln park or highland park..one of them)

I think that I understand the meaning that you meant this. However, since 9-11 I hesitate to make such statements.
(I still dislike Flint however)

we had a project in Flint one day and we had to be on the streets to do some survey work and once the clock hit 2:30 and all the criminals..er studants got out of school that city got pretty dark all of a sudden and i decided to make it a day and get the fuck out of there..that city just plain sicks and is not improving at all.
