how long is too long?
    #630691 - 05/14/02 03:37 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

my buddy innoculated 6 jars with ecuadorians on april 29th, they have been kept at around 78-82 degrees. they still don't show a single sign of growth. they are your typical pf tek jars.

so it has been over two weeks, should he just start over or give it another week or so?
thanks

btw, the spores are from a syringe that was used to innoculate a mycobag, which is fully colonized now.

Maybe try incubating them at a little higher temp. No higher than 86. If the jars are really close I would space them by about 2 inches. EQ's produce heat during colonization so the temp in the jars is a bit higher than the temp outside the jars. If they are really close I would leave your temp where its at, space them, and let them incubate for about another week. If there is no sign of growth by then I would start over.

After 2 weeks they should be nearing completion. My guess would be that you didnt let the jars completely cool before you innoculated them. If you innoculate when the jars are evenly slightly warm you run the risk of killing the spores you are injecting.

actually he ordered the jars from dr.bluethumbs because he couldn't find jars anywhere. i guess they were out of season. (although i saw some at wal-mart yesterday). anyways the jars were plenty cool.

i guess he will try raising the temp, and then if nothing comes of it he will just mix his own batch in these jars (which was the plan, after these jars were finished anyways)

thanks for the advise.

If you see no growth after two weeks then you wont see any at all except maybe for some mold...Just make sure to be more sterile next time and use the oven tek when innoculating. And make SURE that your jars are cool to the touch before injecting. And if you havnt read the FAQ yet, I suggest you do so:

This is what he decided to do...

Since he is going out of town for over a week, and he doesn't have any spores...yet, he figured what the hell.
First he busted open one of the jars the check out the substrate, nothing really obviuos. Except it seemed a little dry.
So he he figured he had nothing to lose. He boiled up some water, then sucked it up into a syringe...then let it sit.
When it cooled he injected just over 2cc's of water into each jar.
It probably won't make a damn bit of difference, but what the hell maybe when he gets back there will be a little surprise in those jars.
If not, no loss, because by that time the new spores will have arrived. So, he can just start over.

peace
