I plan to colonize rye berries from multi spore inoculation. From there I plan to colonize presoaked sterilized wood chips. My question is do I need to put the chips/rye in a filter patch bag and keep them sterile or will that not be necessary? Will the chips colonize in an un-steril environment? I have the bags I just don't want to go though the trouble if it's not necessary.

as long as the rye is fully colonised, the woodchips will colonise without being sterile, and they are harder to contaminate than rye.
