am i an alcoholic?
    #6305094 - 11/27/06 04:15 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

Recently I feel more and more like an alcoholic. Although I drink less now than the past 5 years its still a routine, every night to get drunk with friends or just when chatting on irc. It leaves a void whenever I go a night without and usually by 10pm I will have bought some. Having a 24hour alcohol shop 3 minutes from my house doesnt help I guess.

Most of my dad's family including him have been alcoholics.. and that kinda worries me.
The solution seems so simple - just dont drink but its so easy to, and rewarding

Any advice or suggestions appreciated

see I am 18. From a pretty early age me and friends would drink bottles of hard liquor etc and get drunk beyond words, dont ask its the british culture.

Now its more like 8-12 beers a night, but it doesnt feel like youre getting drunk because its a social thing.. but you still do

Being an alcoholic has nothing to do with age. It's about the alcohol you consume and it's frequency. With that amount every day you're an alcohol addict for sure, even half that amount would make you anddict (=an alcoholic)

quit before you really fuck up your liver and brain, if you haven't already

I would also consider your stated frequency of consumption indicative of alcoholism.  While you may be a functional alcoholic (as I have found myself to be in years past), there is little doubt that such consistent and heavy consumption is not at all healthy.  If you aim to stick around in this world as long as possible and you want to reduce your risks for physical ailment in the future, you best learn to moderate your consumption of all substances.

If you can't do that, quit entirely.
Good luck!

I wouldnt call you an alcoholic yet, but youre getting close.

Like the others said, drink less, and less often.
If you cant do moderation, then you should try quitting altogether.

ive started drinking less. like cutting to 4-6 beers rather than 12 i'd like to stop completely but that'd mean no hanging out with friends at the pub and stuff

By drinking 8-12 beers every night! At that rate, you will die an early death. Aside from the alcohol's effects on your liver, that's 1200-1800 extra empty calories you consume every day. Not only that, but the longer you drink everyday, the more difficult it is to not drink.

If you find it difficult to go a day without drinking, you have a problem. Like Geokills said, try to moderate your intake, and if you can't, you should quit outright.

Two of my closest friends drink like you do; 6 or more beers every single day. They hold down jobs, pay their bills, and they aren't violent, but they are alcoholics. Probably like you, it isn't because they are trying to suppress some trauma in their past, it's only because they've been doing this for so many years that they can't imagine stopping. I can only wonder what their health will be like in 20 years.

You're only 18; do something now before it's too late.

help = pot.

just take a toke whenever you get the urge.  combine with some relaxing music... this can help alot when you are lowering your habit... cuz you know how hard it is to just drink 1 beer, but with pot that becomes possible

goodluck x2

try getting drunk to a reasonable level before going to the pub, and then don't bring any money.

psychedelics can help you too, take over 3 grams of mushies, the higher the dose the better.

I hang out with friends at the pub and I dont drink...

So how often do your friends go pubbing?
Plus, in your first post you said what was making things hard was the 24hour liqour store next to your house... Stop going there? lol.
Only drink on weekends at the pub with friends maybe, stop drinking alone maybe (cause Im assuming that you drink alot at home even when youre alone infront of the computer right?).

Stop that!

I agree. The longer the pattern persists the harder it is to change. Drinking alone is one of the biggest signs. I recently had to reevaluate my drinnking(about 3 months ago.) I was drinking 3 or 5 days a week, often while just chilling at my place alone. I have cut way back, maybe once or twice at the very most a week. Also i drink alot less in a sitting now, and dont keep drinking until there isn't beer/liquor around.

Hehe was rather proud a few weeks ago a half full bottle of booze sat in my fridge for about a week without being touched.

Definetly stop the drinking alone. At the pub maybe set a limit of 3 beers or whatever. I know how hard it is to be around a bunch of friends drinking and not be yourself. I find that, that is the only time when i am sober and wished i had some beer. When you start drinking less you'll be surprised at how much easier it is to drink 2 or 3 and not always be trying to get just a bit drunker. I'v learned to enjoy just a couple beers. Where before i would drink one after another until i ran out or fell asleep. For me it wasn't about getting a buzz it was ALWAYS about being more drunk.

Like they said above try, if you need some extra help get some.

Good luck, and best wishes.

A neighbor of mine just drank himself to death.

And yes you are an alcoholic. Get real.

Most alcoholics start young and stay drinking alcoholics right to the bitter end.

If you want to try and quit, I suggest 7 grams or more of shrooms, alone somewhere. It won't be pretty for most of it but it often enough works. It's very hard to quit drinking.

Be careful man, your liver will already be damaged but if you stop now it'll probably recover.
A blood test at the docs will tell you how your liver's functioning and it won't cost you anything.

If your seriously worried about alcoholism then stop now for your own piece of mind.
There's a psychological addictive side to drinking also so if you find it hard to stop don't assume your physically addicted, but stop now before you wake up with yellow eyes and skin, suddenly needing a liver transplant because your dying from all the poisons in your system..
That's gotta be a horrible way to die.

I raise my alcoholic hand and say high my name is John and yes I am an alcoholic without a doubt. Over this last four day thanksgiving weekend I drank an easy 3-4 cases to my head and my friends had thier own been I ended up blacking out several times, smoking crack, eating acid and watching horror movies like blade runner, next day waking up from a black out still tripping call up buddies drink more beer then do so ecstacy all the while succefully avoiding all the incoming calls from coke dealers trying to make a sale.

Woke up sunday morning nursing my last beer while sniffing a 15mg roxie. Yeah Ive cut back alot since then went cold turkey all of sunday after I came down except 1mg of klonzapam. I was miserable. Didn't have a drink monday only 1 hit weed plus 2mg kpin. Tuesday 4 beers at a wing joint with my dad no more then hit of weed and 1mg of kpin. Wensday tonight again 3 beers at a resteraunt with dinner and 2mg Kpin. Welcome to rehab Island Im trying my best to cut back ya know. I also need to quit the kpins. I only take them at night for sleep maybe I should switch to ambien or something to come down off them for awhile then nothing. Used to be a few beers put me out but not these days.

I hadn't had a seizure since i was  a teenagege but i've had 3 in the past 2 years. I had been drinking beer all 3X, i'm not saying that  the beer was a causitive factor but it might have been. I'm a total alcoholic at the age of 52 by the way, took me a while to get here(i didn't even start drinking til i was 19)It's just recently that it's really gotten out of hand :frown:

Well thanks for the well wishes and much love to all my fellow alkys on the board. We need to realize that this is a progressive disease and be constantly aware of actions and their soon to be consequences. Not to say that we can't have a drink or two here or there but the kind of behavior where you drink till its all gone then want more is socially and morally unacceptable. It is destroying our souls. Just watch your asses guys/girls.

Alcohol is a tough one to give up for sure, especially when there is a physiological predispotion(ie having an alcoholic father and 2 brothers)Hopefully this is just a passing phase(the frequency of drinking i mean) due to my having had some really bad virus for over 3 weeks, drinking and passing out is about the only way i can deal with it....
