does your friend want to make some juice? true ergot starts off pinkish to dark-purple colored and ends up black.
ergot wont fruit <----sorry...thats a wrong statement. ergot will fruit. thanks for the info frontstreet!
ergot itself is not a drug...it will kill you
so do you have a bag full of grains that are infected with ergot? or a bag full of mushy blac stuff?

I can assure you that whatever you have, it's not ergot, which grows only on living rye.
There are a number of common black molds, it might be Rhizopus or Aspergillus, both of which you don't want to eat or share with your friend.
Here's ergot:
Claviceps purpurea on rye grain

I have grown ergot in a fermentor in the lab. Living rye is not required.

Yes, I know it CAN be grown in culture on a variety of substrates. I only meant it only grows on living rye flowers (and related plants) in nature, and would not colonize a bag of rye berries on its own, even if it were present.

What does your friend plan on doing with ergot? Trying to make some LSD??? Very complicated, and you would die trying...

Hey Felix you say that ergot dosn't fruit? I think that you are very wrong in that statment. My friend is actually fruitng as I am typing this now. They are tiny things with bright orange/red itty bitty caps. ERGOT SHROOMS. Damn they are pretty. Antways I doubt that is what is growing inside of that far now but if you had a culture you could potentially make alot of LSA, LS, or LSD. And yes if you don't know what you are doing you will die. Not so true in the LS or LSA but still if any of a liquid ergot culture were to get on you you will die. Vascular constrictor. As for the LSD if you can do it without blowing yourself up with hydrazene, good for you. Just don't die. Peace, Fronty McNiggs
