WBS QUART SPAWN JAR PREPERATION

There are a lot of pictorials of spawn jar preparation. They all seem to vary just slightly. Here's a pictorial of the way I prepare spawn jars.

The formula makes 14 Qt. jars. (this is nice due to the fact that I have 2 PC's that hold 7 jars a piece.) :wink:

First off I scoop 10 FULL scoops of Bird Basics Brand Wbs into a large pot. (full scoops means it's over 1 cup. see pic

Fill the large pot with water. Allow the grains to soak for 24hrs.

After soaking is complete. Strain out any "Floaters" and discard them. Mostly these will consist of sun flower seeds, with some Milo, and millet. You don't have to get every one, just most of them. Some say the natural oils in sunflower seeds help.

But if they all float to the top, when you pour the grain out to strain it. they all collect at the bottom of the colander in one group. :foreheadslap:

Once most of the floaters have been taken out, Place the pots on the stove. I place full covered pots on Med/High for 20Min. During, check ever 5 min and stir. The goal here is to get the water hot but not boiling. It's even better to have the water warm, but not hot. "light steaming, few bubbles"

WARNING---------DO NOT BOIL THE GRAINS---------WARNING
If you do, better scratch the grain and start over.

Once the water is warm, we remove the pots from heat and place in a safe place to steep for 2hrs. to absorb maximum water, without bursting.

While we wait for the grain to absorb, we can get our jars prepared. Cut Tyvek envelopes into squares that cover the jar.
(a single tyvek envelope can be cut to cover 18 wide mouth jars)

The way I put jars together go like this. I drill one single 1/4" hole down the center of the metal lid. This hole will act as the inoculation point as well as gas exchange.

Once the grain has fully hydrated to maximum capacity, we're going to dump it out in these big colanders (got em at walmart)
You're gonna want to rinse all the starches and bad spores we've been germinating in the soak. I like to use my garden hose. works great and has allot of pressure. (2 pots of WBS means 2 big colanders)
Make sure to rinse thoroughly

SHAKE COLANDER SO IT DRIPS, THEN LET SIT FOR 30 MIN (Important step. Makes sure grains are not too wet)

After letting WBS drip dry for 30 min. Get a large spoon, or anything to load up the jars about 2/3 way full. The spoon I use makes perfect fills in 6 scoops. (I make my jars pretty full, you don't have to go that high)

Follow above mentioned lid preparation instructions.
Jar, Tyvek, Metal Lid, Band, Alum Foil

Once all jars are covered in Alum Foil, place inside PC

I fill one of these with 48oz. water, that's the amount of water placed inside the PC. (Yeah, it's from my coffee maker)

Turn burners on HIGH, until the PC gets up to 15 PSI
once PC is venting steam, turn down to MED it will still be able to maintain 15Psi without
-Burning your grain
-Loosing all the water in your PC
-Danger of exceeding 15psi

ONCE YOU TURN THE STOVE DOWN TO MED START TIMER FOR 90MIN. PC TIME

After 90 min, remove PC's from heat. Allow to sit for at least 15min. Once PC has reached 0psi, remove the rocker weight (or vent the PC) prior to removing lid. (Just in case)

Remove the jars from the PC

WARNING---------JARS WILL BE EXTREMELY HOT. USE CAUTION---------WARNING

Check jars for Cracks, Bursted kernels, starches.

You'll notice that the grain seems to be compacted. We want to shake these jars while they are still hot. If they cool this way, it is a PITA to shake the jars later on. This makes it airy so Mycelium can thrive.

Once the jars are all shook up, place them back inside the PC, and allowed to cool overnight.

INOCULATION:

We will be inoculating with LC (Liquid Culture)
LC has been previously prepared, and allowed to spin on the stir plate prior to filling syringes.

Place the sterile empty syringe into the self healing injector, in many cases you will have to tip the jar to fill with liquid.

ALL MY INJECTIONS ARE DONE IN OPEN AIR, AND ARE DONE AT MY RISK.
IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT, PLEASE USE A GLOVEBOX OR FLOWHOOD.

Lately I have been using allot of LC per jar, with excellent results. Therefore, I will be inoculating the jars with about 4cc's each

Quickly plunge syringe into grain jar from the top center hole through the tyvek. While injecting I make a circular motion sweeping from 6 O'clock to 12 O'clock.

I do 3 jars at a time, and once they are inoculated, Place a small piece of Mico-Pore tape (Gentle Paper Tape) over the inoculation point.

The mico-pore tape removes easily as long as you don't PC with it on the jar lid.

Give the jar a good shake, try and distribute as much of that LC around as possible.

Once all are complete, place them in a warm place to incubate. Do not exceed 82F during incubation
