is it really necessary to flame the syringe with a lighter 30 seconds? that seems a bit extreme to me... i alcohol swab the syringe as well after i use the lighter, therefore it seems a bit crazy to do it for 30 seconds?
is it really necessary? or could i do it for less time?

I inoculated 10-12 jars with the same syringe over several weeks and had no contamination using alcohol swab (paper towel) only. I venture to say I was lucky but if you are very careful, apparently you do not need to flame the syringe.

Alcohol doesn't clean inside the needle. Flame until red hot, then use. RR

Unless I just opened a sterile needle I always flame it until its red and than either wipe it with an alcohol or just drip a drop or two of solution to cool it before injecting

Yah I just use a sterile needle.
The only time I've had contams is when I've flamed it.

how often should i do this during the course of innoculating jars? should it be every couple of jars?

If you flame between each jar, you eliminate the possibility of cross contamination. RR

question as far as air sanitization - i was using Oust air sanitizer and it says it kills odor causing bacteria.. does this mean the air is sanitized? also does the black residue that the flame leaves on the syringe cause contamination

I never flame a syringe but use a new one everytime. If I get one from a vendor then I use an alcohol swab. All under a glove box.

I've recently only been using alchohol swabs, and I've had no contamination thus far. I've had contams from when I used a lighter..
The syringe needles that I now use have a large plastic part where they join the syringes. This isn't good because this plastic begins to melt as soon as I flame the needle.

I always wipe off the soot with an alcohol swab but I have read numerous times that it wont cause any harm

Yes, it means its "sanitized"... aka, somewhat cleaner than before. It by no means makes the air sterile or the working environment totally clean, and as you mention targets bacteria, its effectiveness on other forms of contaminates isn't necessarily very high. In other words, it might help some, but its definitely no substitute for good procedure and being careful/using common sense when it comes time to do your inoculations.

I am a noob but I am getting hung up on the flaming the syringe part. If I am flaming it red hot between each jar or petri, aren't I killing the couple of drops inside the needle? I am only injecting one or two drops per jar/petri so aren't I just injecting dead fried up spores that were in the needle part?

Squirt a few drops out needle tip to rid those dead spores and to cool needle before inoculation. Those few drops you are not losing that much spores

Never wipe with alcohol after flame, flame sterilizes, alcohol sanitizes... just an fyi
