Yeah I'm in Mid Wales.

We picked it but got rid of it the second we had a photo! Then many hand washings proceeded...

Phallus impudicus. Looks too big and meaty for ph. hadriani to me. Nice find, those grow a lot here as well.

Hmmm, at first I thought they were synonymous. Though, according to Micheal Kuo, the only distinction between the two is the colour of the volva, which is not pictured in the ID request.

Quote:

Phallus impudicus and Phallus hadriani differ only in the color of the volva (white in the former, purplish in the latter)

You may be right, from where did you learn that P. impudicus was more "big and meaty" than P. hadriani? Hunting experience?

For some reason, when I look at stink horns I feel like gagging, and sometimes I do end up doing it. Even if just looking at a picture of one  :puke:

Yeah, experience indeed. I find a lot of phallus impudicus around here (they're as common as fly agarics in this region) and I've come to know the species quite well, especially the macroscopic properties in all stages of fruiting. So I immediately recognized the species from the photo in this thread.

Btw, there's one more very important difference between ph. impudicus and ph. hadriani: habitat. Whereas hadriani appears to favor sandy soils, almost void of nutrients, ph. impudicus appears to prefer the somewhat acidic and nutrient rich forest floors.

Ahh, good to know.

I bet that P. hadriani tends to be less substantial compared P. impudicus due to the very substrate.  The less nutrient rich sandy substrate is less likely to support bulky growth.
