casing, room temperature or incubator?
    #6296593 - 11/18/06 11:08 AM (17 years, 4 months ago)

I was wondering right after you make your casing and wrap it in aluminum foil, where do you guys recommend putting your casing, in room temperature or in the incubator?

I put mine in incubating temps. But make sure you check them frequently, I left them for 3 days without checking them at all, had a lot of overlay, and when I put them in FC they kept on growing more overlay for the first few days (although my room temp is quite high, might not have been sufficient temp drop for pin initiating)

This is a great thread on pinning strategies. I highly suggest you read the whole thing.

incubate at 82-84 degrees for 3 days without opening and looking, on the third day I will take a look and see if any mycelium has poked through if not I cover for another day. as soon as I see any mycelium poking through in a number of spots around the container I patch and place directly into the fruiting chamber which has a temp. of 74-77 degrees (again optimal) I also introduce 12-16hrs. of light, some people say you don't need this what they don't realize is that yes the pins do need this amount of stimulation to get the most pins possible and after that once the pins are set then you can find there sweet spot which I suggest at least 12hrs.

I never incubate trays or tubs. Trays and tubs like to heat up on their own as is. They stay on a wire wrack from spawn run to casing run at 74-76 degrees. Incubation risks higher temperatures which aren't really needed IMHO. Once mycelium pokes through I follow standard FC preperation, patch and introduce to FC.

You should always leave at room temp.

When doing bulk trays the nitrogen content of your sub while in the spawn run will heat to a past incubation temp. By adding more heat to an already hot spawn you are leaving your self open for slower colonization times and possible burn sub.

Best idea is to have your tub on a wire rack so air can flow on all sides or prop it up with 1/2 pints off the floor.

I cased PF cakes a week ago, and they seem to make their own heat, when I feel the sides of my tray you can actually feel that it is warmer then the air around it.
