The object of this post is to give folks a BASIC IDEA HOW TO BUILD A BIG BULK PASTURIZER. (for trays, or bags of bulk substrate)
Below is a rough sketch of a very basic bulk pasteurizer (anyone with basic carpentry & electrical skills can build)
ROUGH SKETCH 4X4x8 ft pole barn style building
BASIC MATERIALS Four ten ft treated 4X4's Five sheets exterior plywood Five sheets thick Styrofoam insulation 2X6 floor joists 60 ft of 3 inch angle (as mounts for racks & post ties) 4 bags fence post concrete Hinges & door hardware If plumbed for water, a garden hose works.
NO, I did not list every nut, bolt, nail. Again, the object is to give you the basic premise. You take it from there.
You will need BASIC TOOLS As well as rough carpenter & electrical skills.
You can build it as primitive, or fancy, as you want.
How you heat it, is up to you. (SOME HINTS BELOW )

LOL, up LATE, don't you mean.
It's not an idea. It's a fairly inexpensive practical solution. For those with the need, skill, room & ability. (who can afford it)
Next stage UP, is a 20 or 40 ft steel cargo container. You load with a forklift, LOL.

One of our local growers uses a similar building and heats it with propane fired 'salamanders' which are those torpedo looking heaters used on construction sites. He puts the the heater right inside, with the propane bottle just outside the building. He actually uses his grow area, and makes up the trays of substrate, then heats the entire grow area to pasteurize, because it also kills off all the flies and molds in the room. RR

Busboy trays, or plastic mortar mix tubs, work well for holding lots of bulk substrate, in large pasteurizers

I assume the cook times would vary based on the bulk and heating methods. How would you go about timing? Use a thermostat embeded in the substrate?

It will all vary, by load weight, thickness, trays, or bags.
You can go simple, or fancy.
A couple candy thermometer embedded in substrate trays, or bags will give you internal substrate temps. A couple outdoor thermometers hung from slats will give you extremal temps, inside the building.
Patience is REQUIRED. A full load, it is advisable to run exterior temps near 170F, first day (24 hours), then lower to 150/155F second & third day.
A 3 day run will usually do the trick.
Object is to bring internal temps up to 145 / 155f range, for about 8 to 12 hours.
A lot will depend on outdoor temps. Summer (heat)is far quicker, winter (cold)is longer.
If anyone builds one of these. Test & tinker with it, empty. UNTIL you can CONTROL & MAINTAIN proper temp ranges.

Ya, Tenn/Stud should build one 2X that big. It might improve his delivery times.
But, I speculate the truth is, he doesn't actually pasteurize his filter patch bagged substrate.
Reason being, folks have mentioned storing it for months. Prior to use.
A truly pasteurized only substrate has a lot of living bacteria & microbes in it. Given, they have nutrients, moisture & gas exchange. Over time, they will grow (unless refrigerated). Over time, that microbial activity in the bags, becomes VISIBLE.
Which, those who have stored it over long periods. Say, doesn't happen.
My guess is the bags are either nuked, or steam heat STERILIZED.
I have never had the pleasure of using any of his product.
But, anyone who has used unicorn filter/patch bags, could usually tell. If the bag had been autoclaved, by close inspection of it.

Close inspection of the bags i received, i don't think they were pc'd.
Just like you said, you can tell if a autoclavable bag has been run through the pc. I totally could be wrong also, (i have no bag to look at right now)
Makes alot of sence. pasturized, or steralized... either way it colonized great for me.
Working on those times would be great, but IMO i thought Mike would have pasturized it like stamets shows in TMC. Big ass barrel sitting on a flame at 160F. Load up bags to cool and drip. then load up the filterpatch bags. I would like to know the methodology used.
Since he is a 1 man operation, sneaking in there is better than MI3 (mission Impossible 3)

I was not in any way, saying Mikes product is not great stuff. Those, I know/trust that have used it had great success's with it.
In particular, check HippyChicks grows, with it. THEY ROCK
Just looking at Mikes pre-pasteurized product page picture. It would appear the bag shown IS NOT STERILIZED.

PASTEURIZED is PREFERABLE. Which contains BENEFICIAL live microbes. That tend to fight off contaminates.
STERILIZED is just that. Meaning, it is devoid of microbial activity/life. So, it is open to any contaminate, that gets to it.

i made one of these that can do a cooler full in a couple hours
$50 wallpaper steamer thingy and a $10 cooler. drill a hole into the cooler big enough to put the hose in, then i drilled a 1/8" hole for venting on the top. use a basket or whatever to hold your substrate. i use a wire mesh on top of shot glasses to create room for the steam to go throughout the whole cooler.

You can use a AA pressure cooker as a steam generator by attaching a heat tolerant tubing such as teflon to the nozzle you set the weight on. Route the tubing to a tub or barrel with your straw. RR

^I bet two of those wagner wallpaper steamers would do it. Only thing is, I hear those run out of water really fast so you would need to rig something up - either a larger resevoir or an auto filler.

HA HA me too a few years back a made 5 gallons of plum wine like a do every year when my orchard is ready , but this year the plumbs a little higher in acid than normal and the yeast i used had a higher attenuation than i normally use but i had a huge liquid culture of it so used it anyway , long story short the hooch was super DRY and Sour because the yeast used ALL the sugar and the extra acid in it was just plan bad.
So took my copper wort chiller and hooked it to my presser cooker and made some thrice distilled ever clear. it truly was white lighting luckily i learned what fuse alcohol is and what fore shots and after shots are only hurt my eyes a little now i make whiskey a few times a year with a Still i made from a 30 gal electric water heater
