Myc vs. Cobweb on Verm Layer of PF-style cake *PICS*
    #6294343 - 11/17/06 03:57 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

This is a PF-Tek style jar that is being fruited by Bob (a friend of a friend). He is keeping it in the jar, and letting it fruit through the verm layer on the top. It has been kept in a plastic container, sprayed and kept at 95% humidity and 75f temperature. It is fanned 3-4 times per day.

Often there are small, very white chunks in the vermiculite layer. They have no obvious smell. It is suspected that it could be cobweb due to how it audibly fizzles when sprayed with peroxide - but sometimes it disappears, sometime it does not. Also, it just doesn't really look like cobweb. Just small white balls of fluff.

Until now, Bob has simply removed these balls and sprayed the cake heavily with peroxide. But the next day, they are always back.

Also, there could be a chance that they are small chunks of BRF that got mixed in with the verm, and are being colonized either by mushroom mycelium or mold. There is no signs of green sporulation, and no obvious smell (then again, it is Bob's first grow, so his nose might not be soon keen).

Do you believe that this is mycelium or some kind of contamination? If contam, is it possible to save the cake?

Tell bob to quit screwing with the mycelium as it tries to colonize the casing layer of verm so it can fruit.
